Obituary published on Legacy.com by Natural Grace Funerals & Cremations - Los Angeles on Nov. 23, 2025.
Susan Kay Scholl went home to heaven on November 8, 2025 at the age of 81 in Huntington Beach, California due to complications from heart failure. She lived her life centered on her family, friends, and faith. She was a force: fierce and feisty, who knew what she liked in life and let you know it. She shined as a supportive and adventurous Army wife and was tremendously creative: running a successful Kwick Kits scrapbooking business, painting, and hosting "Suzie's Ceramics" classes in her garage over the years. She is survived by her loving son, Brian Scholl, daughter, Jennifer Scholl Cassity (married to Mike Cassity) and her beloved grandchildren, Emma and Kaden Cassity, whom she took great pride in and loved to spoil.
Susan (aka Sue, Susie, and Suzie) was born in Farragut, Idaho on August 15, 1944 to her parents, Orville and Shirley Bathke, while her dad served in the Navy. The family soon moved to Port Washington, WI, which became their hometown. Music was a big part of the Bathke family. Seeing her parents' love of music and performances in a Big Band in the 40's and 50's, Susan took up piano, guitar, and the flute. Her younger brother Jim and sister Barb also shared in the family music talents and looked up to their big sis.
While attending Port Washington High as a Junior, Susan literally ran into her would-be husband, Wayne Scholl of Belgium, WI, a Senior, while both were late for class and collided with books flying. Their love story began there and continued long-distance as Wayne soon went off to West Point. They combined his West Point graduation and their wedding day on June 10, 1965, not wanting to be apart another day.
Army life for Wayne and Susan began in Frankfurt Germany where Wayne was stationed and the newlyweds also traveled around Europe. But Susan learned early on that Army life is not easy, as Wayne went off to Vietnam. While he was deployed, she gave birth to their son, Brian, whom Wayne met for the first time when Brian was 5 months old. Three years and several moves later, she gave birth to their daughter Jennifer. As a dedicated Army wife and stay-at-home mom, Susan gave it her all: making family a priority, instilling strong moral values, love of country, working hard, and being creative. She was always up for a new adventure, living by our family motto to "bloom where you're planted" and our dad's saying "Ever Onward!". She made many close friends and memories over the years with moves to Kansas, Virginia, Wisconsin, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, California, Texas, and Washington. Army families bond together and some of her favorite moments were spent driving across country, camping, and exploring as a family.
When the kids got older, Susan wanted a new challenge and set out to get her California real estate license. She passed her exam on the first try and had a successful career working for Coldwell Banker in California and US Home Corporation in Virginia. She continued to support Wayne as he retired from the Army in 1995 as a full colonel and 30 years of service, and as he started working in the private sector.
Following the untimely and tragic passing of her husband Wayne in February 2001, Susan made a final move down to Huntington Beach, CA with her son Brian to live near daughter Jennifer and her family: husband Mike Cassity and granddaughter Emma. Five years later, she welcomed her grandson, Kaden. Susan loved her grandchildren more than anything and loved living so close to them. She enjoyed many years of babysitting, trips to Disneyland, playing Barney videos, doing arts and crafts, and going to school events / graduations.
Susan discovered a passion for scrapbooking and started by making albums with her own pictures. But she quickly shifted her creative talents to design scrapbook kits and launched her scrapbook business, Kwick Kits. Through scrapbooking, she made new friends, went to retreats, and was always focused on making kits to sell at yearly Scrapbook Expos. She proudly confessed with a smile that scrapbooking kept her busy and out of trouble.
Susan attended First Christian Church in Huntington Beach, CA with her daughter Jennifer. She was active in the church, volunteered, and shared her faith with others. Our family is comforted knowing that she is at rest with our Lord and Savior.
Her ashes will be scattered near Deception Pass in Washington with her family. A memorial and celebration of life will be scheduled in the Spring at First Congregational Church in Port Washington, WI. Details TBD.
