Susan E. Stallings Jones of Indianapolis, Indiana, died at her home on the morning of Saturday, July 19, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in High Point, North Carolina, Susan was the beloved daughter of Mary Bush and Charles DeArmon Stallings. She is survived by her devoted husband, Richard Hugh Jones; her daughters, Whitney (Jerry) Gilliatt and Carrie (Jahanzaib) Qureshi; her sister, Barbara (Bill) Gerhardt; and her brother, David (Barbara) Stallings. She also leaves behind several treasured nieces and nephews who brought her great joy.
Susan was raised in Thomasville, North Carolina, and graduated from Thomasville Senior High School in 1965. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Shortly afterward, Susan joined the United States Air Force as a First Lieutenant and Registered Nurse, serving with distinction during the Vietnam War era. She was stationed at Wilford Hall Psychiatric Hospital at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, where she worked as a psychiatric nurse.
Following her military service, Susan earned her Master’s degree in Nursing from Indiana University. She went on to dedicate nearly four decades of her career to the Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, where she served as Managing Director of the Psychiatric Department. Her leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to veterans’ mental health care left a lasting impact on countless lives.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Susan was cherished by her friends, family, and colleagues for her warmth, wisdom, and gentle spirit. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A Memorial Service for Susan will be at 4:00pm on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at Flanner Buchanan – Oaklawn Memorial Gardens (Conner Suite) – 9700 Allisonville Rd., Indianapolis, IN 46250, with a Memorial Gathering to follow until 6:00pm.
Burial will take place at a later date at Holly Hill Memorial Cemetery in North Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Susan’s honor to Every Mother Counts, a cause close to her heart.
