Susie Edwards Zdansky, beloved wife, mother, and Nana, passed away at the age of 81, May 18, 2025. Born March 27, 1944, to Eddie and Frankie Cates of El Dorado, Arkansas.
Where do you even begin with such a spunky, vibrant lady?
Susie secretly married the love of her life, Doug Edwards, on April 6, 1962 - just weeks before her high school graduation. It wasn't until after walking the stage that she decided it was time to let her parents in on the secret. As the story goes, her mother, Frankie, chased Doug down the street with a shotgun in hand - a tale that became a cherished piece of family lore.
Susie and Doug shared 24 years of marriage and raised three wonderful children together before cancer took Doug too soon. His loss was deeply felt by all as well as her parents, Eddie and Frankie, who grieved their beloved son-in-law.
In the midst of heartbreak, God graciously brought L.A. Zdansky into Susie's life. L.A. stepped into their lives with gentle love, devotion, and joy. He cherished, honored, and adored Susie every single day until his own passing in August of 2023.
Susie's heart was rooted in family and people. She never met a stranger and made everyone she encountered feel seen, welcomed, and loved. Her warmth, her laugh, and her kindness left lasting impressions wherever she went.
Professionally, Susie spent most of her career in the insurance world, where her dedication, attention to detail, and sharp administrative skills made her an invaluable asset. She was often the first face clients saw - always greeting them with a radiant smile and a helpful spirit.
In her free time, Susie loved packing up the motorhome with L.A. and heading off to explore new places. Whether they were discovering quiet campgrounds or browsing antique shops, those trips brought her immense joy. She had a special eye for collectibles - from Raggedy Ann & Andy and rose-patterned tea sets, to poodle trinkets and festive holiday décor. Her home was filled with the charm of her beloved knick-knacks, each one telling a story.
Susie lived a life full of love, laughter, and generosity. She was the heart of her family and a bright light to all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, and everyone blessed to have been part of her journey.
She will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Frankie Cates, and her beloved husbands, Doug Edwards and L.A. Zdansky.
Left to cherish her memory are her loving children: James Edwards (Jeannine), Darren Edwards, and Diedre Rabalais (Doug) Her grandchildren: Tara Edwards, Lauren Lara, Bailey Jack (Josh), Abigail Rabalais, Dawson Rabalais, and Madeline Durr (Cole). Along with nine precious great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and what truly felt like a million friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Susie's beautiful life will be held on May 31, 2025. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m., with the service to follow at 12:00 p.m. Seaside Funeral Home – 4357 Ocean Drive, Corpus Christi.
In true Susie fashion, we kindly ask that guests refrain from wearing black. Instead, please wear vibrant colors that reflect her joyful spirit and love for life.
Reception will follow at O'Brien's – 9741 Leopard St. Corpus Christi.
