Obituary published on Legacy.com by Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors on Nov. 21, 2023.
Suzanne Haygood Driver was born in
Redlands, CA to Mr. William F Haygood and Sue Ann Haygood in 1939. She was raised in
Ridgeland, SC and after graduation attended Nursing School. After embarking on her career as a Registered Nurse, Suzanne was coaxed into a blind double date with a handsome young Naval Aviator named Ace Driver in 1961. After a whirlwind romance, they enjoyed a 59-year devoted marriage together. She was a loving wife and mother who also found time to hone her creative skills in cooking, baking, crafting, and sewing. She loved sewing, quilting, but also making soft sculptures, flags, windsocks.you name it, even mink fur teddy bears, she did it, and probably did it better than most other people. Suzanne loved tennis and if she wasn't home, most likely you could find her on the tennis courts in Sandbridge Beach, VA then in
Fernandina Beach, FL. She loved the beach and living in Sandbridge and Fernandina. These beaches held a very special place in her heart, and both provided friendships that she cherished for the rest of her life.
Suzanne worked some of the hardest jobs possible, a Registered Nurse, Navy wife, and devoted mother of two boys, who weren't always on their best behavior. She started her own art/craft business aptly named "Suzanne Of Sandbridge" (
SOS for short) in the 1980s. Suzanne worked art festivals that included the Va. Beach Boardwalk Art Show for many years. If that wasn't challenging enough, she decided to go back nursing as an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Nurse. Between nursing, tennis, shark tooth hunting, she started participating in local quilt shows. She collected numerous awards for her quilts, and she enjoyed making every single one. She especially loved making special occasion quilts for family and friends. Hopefully, you may have one or two.
Suzanne was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and suffered a stroke nearly eight years ago. She was insulted by a doctor predicting she would be wheelchair bound or worse in less than 4 years. She didn't let these setbacks define her or hold her back. She was indeed a very tough woman.
Suzanne was a loving, caring daughter, wife, mother, grandmother (SuSu), sister, aunt, and friend. She is survived by her son Kirk and his wife Stephanie, their children Ace and Christen, and granddaughter Monica Smith. She also had many nieces and nephews, all of whom she dearly loved. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ace C. Driver, Jr, son, Charles Driver, parents, William Haygood & Sue Ann Snead, and her brother Bill Haygood.
Her family will hold a visitation for her friends to pay their respects and share stories at Oxley Heard Funeral Home from 4pm-6pm on January 5th in
Fernandina Beach, FL. Suzanne will be laid to rest with her husband Ace, and son Charles, in the Millen City Cemetery in Millen GA on January 6, 2023, at 12 noon.
