Sylvia Mahaley Obituary

Sylvia Arlene Everhart Mahaley, 75, of Salisbury, passed away on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Born April 26, 1950, in Salisbury, Sylvia was the daughter of the late Eugene Everhart and Hazel Smith Everhart. She was the devoted wife of David.

A 1968 graduate of North Rowan High School, Sylvia enjoyed a successful career with Norfolk Southern before courageously pursuing her true passion for science. She earned an Associate in Arts degree from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College (RCCC), where she later received the prestigious RCCC Excellence in Teaching Award. She went on to graduate with a biology degree from Catawba College, where she was inducted into Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society. Sylvia inspired countless students as a science teacher at South Rowan High School and RCCC. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Spencer.

Sylvia's radiant warmth touched every life she encountered--she was simply loved by everyone who knew her, and she will be deeply missed. She had a passion for animals: her horses, dogs, koi pond and caring for many feral cats. Sylvia also found joy in traveling, cherished her "girlfriend" time and trips, camping in the mountains, fishing at the beach, crafting, cruising in her RV, and tooling around in her golf cart. Above all, Sylvia's greatest happiness came from loving and caring for her family; her generous heart and ever-present grace made her the cornerstone of their lives.

In addition to her parents, Sylvia was preceded in death by her brother, Gregory Allyn.

Those who will forever treasure her memory include her loving husband, David; sons Seth and Ross; beloved grandson Troy (mother Mary Chaffin); stepchildren Greg (Amy) Mahaley of Flowery Branch, GA and Lori (Hanns) Westphal of Chapel Hill; brother Stephen (Kathy) Everhart of Hickory; sister Faye Wilson of Lewisville; sister-in-law Linda Lackey Everhart; five step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and her cherished English White Labrador, Fynn.

The Mahaley family will hold a private celebration of Sylvia's extraordinary life and enduring grace.

With heartfelt gratitude from the Mahaley family to everyone who loved and supported Sylvia throughout her journey--she loved you all dearly.

As the days and weeks pass, and as you return to life's routine, may you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. I worked with Sylvia and knew Dave from NS. Both good people and were liked by everyone. Need more like them in this world !

Sylvia & I met and worked together at NS and she was a delightful soul. Always kind. We found a common love for horses and shared some trips to horse farms and struggled and laughed through learning horse antics. I remember when both Seth & Ross were born. Truly enjoyed our season together. My sincerest condolences to Dave and family.

To the Mahaley Family: I have so many great memories of Sylvia, sleep overs in the basement, built in bunk beds and on the floor(with Steve and Greg) in High School. Times that will always be remembered. I pray that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will give you all comfort and peace. Your friend always David Arrowood

Such a beautifully written obituary, it describes Sylvia perfectly. I was blessed to not only be her cousin, but also her friend and coworker. The memories I have with her go from my childhood when she would dress Faye and I up in her clothing and put makeup on us so we could be "grown up" like Sylvia. I remember many a night eating pizza from Village Inn and sitting around Hazel´s kitchen table playing cards and laughing for hours. I also loved teaching with her at RCCC, laughing and drinking coffee between classes. It was the best! So many precious memories. As I saw her battle cancer, I admired her for her strength and resilience. She was a precious soul, I love her dearly and will miss her the rest of my life.
