Sylvia Jean Phares

Sylvia Jean Phares (nee Smith), 80, of Oberlin, formerly of Elyria, passed away

surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness on Wednesday, November 5,

2025. Sylvia was born on February 24, 1945, in Dog Patch, W to Edward and

Laura (nee Arms) Smith.

Sylvia worked as a nurse's aide at Good Samaritan Nursing Home for 35 years.

She was a faithful member of the Pearlbrook Church of God in Cleveland for

many years and formerly attended Westlake Church of God. She shared her

love of God as a Sunday school teacher; she also served as the church

treasurer.

She loved singing and spending time engaged in work at the church. Most of

all, Sylvia treasured time with her family.

Surviving members of Sylvia's family include her children Brian Phares (Shari)

of Elyria, Bobby Phares (the late Carri) of Elyria, Tina Kelly (Kevin) of Oberlin

and Larry Phares (Mary) of North Olmsted; eleven grandchildren; eleven great

grandchildren; and sister Helen Zenbauer of Galina, KS.

Preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert, parents Edward and

Laura Smith, sisters Judy Pettry and Bernadine Adkins, brothers Frank and

David Smith and daughter in law Carri Phares.

Everyone who knew Sylvia, knew her life evolved around serving her family and

church family.

Memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 6-7pm,

at the Busch Funeral Home, 114 Second St., Elyria, with the Memorial Service

to follow at 7pm. Rev. Gary Lauzon, Pastor of Pearlbrook Church of God to officiate.
