Sylvia Rose Thurmond, 79, of Sullivan, MO, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Washington, MO surrounded by her family. Born on May 31, 1946, in Boaz, KY to Thomas and Ina (Hooper) Elbert, Sylvia was a beacon of love and kindness to all who knew her. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.

Growing up in Corpus Christi, TX with her adoptive parents, Ross and Ruth Peeler, Sylvia received an education that would shape her compassionate and caring nature. Her heart found its match when she married Gerald "Jerry" Thurmond on February 5, 1964, while he completed his service in the Navy. Together, they welcomed three beautiful children into the world: Jeff, Diana, and Kimberly. The family eventually settled in Sullivan, where Sylvia and Jerry began their life together, building a strong and loving home.

Sylvia embraced her role as a wife and mother with grace and dedication. Once her children were grown, she ventured into the workforce, becoming a respected manager at the Arrow Mini Mart in Stanton. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as she worked alongside Jerry in owning "The Swan" and their music store on Clark St. in Sullivan. She stood by Jerry's side in all their endeavors, including their joint service with the Meramec Friends of the NRA, where she most recently held the position of Treasurer.

In 2013, Sylvia and Jerry were instrumental in establishing the local "Hoot 'n Nanny" events, which greatly impacted the community. Over twelve years, ninety-seven events were held, raising nearly $270,000 for individuals and families in need. Sylvia's commitment to her community extended to her involvement with the Ambassadors ministry through Sullivan Christian Church, now known as the Goodwill Ambassadors of Sullivan, and her support of US Veterans. She was also a proud supporter of the Future Farmers of America program.

Sylvia was a past member of Sullivan Christian Church and a current member of First Baptist Church of Stanton. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, and she expressed it through her involvement with Vacation Bible School, Upward Basketball, and Journey to Bethlehem programs.

Sylvia's family was her pride and joy. She cherished every moment spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reveling in the years she cared for and raised them. Her family-oriented nature made her a beloved figure within the expansive Thurmond family. Sylvia's hobbies included bowling, cake decorating, and gardening. She had a passion for redecorating and rearranging her home, always creating a welcoming and loving environment.

Those who knew Sylvia will remember her for her loving and kind spirit. She had a unique ability to make everyone feel at home and valued. Her life was a testament to love, service, and devotion to her family and community.
