Even though Terry graduated high school with the Class of 1967 from Forest Lake, Minnesota, he also enlisted in the United States Naval Air Reserve on January 25,1966. The summer before graduation he entered their Summer Accelerated Training Program. Terry graduated September 1966 with the United States Naval Air Station Twin Cities, Minneapolis, Minnesota with Company A, First Platoon. After High School Graduation he was transferred to NRMC Bainbridge, Maryland. He was stationed in Alameda California, Jacksonville Florida, and overseas in Spain as well. Terry served in active duty until March 1970. Serving our nation as an Aircraft Electrician Terry earned the National Service Defense Medal and was Honorably Discharged. He continued to serve with the Honor Guard at Military Funerals until February 1972. Something he was going to start again with the American Legion Post 83 here in Lindstrom, Minnesota.
After the military, Terry went into the electrical trades, then transferred into Civil Engineering and Highway Technology. Graduating from the St Paul Vocational Institute in June 1973. He then proceeded to work for the University of Minnesota as a Principal Engineering Assistant at all University of Minnesota Campuses. Working his way up to a Junior Engineer in the Health Sciences Facilities Management and Fire Warden for the Medical Center on campus. He was also a member of several safety committees within the university throughout his tenure there. Terry worked with the university until August of 1999, earning a 25 Years of Distinguished Service Award.
From June 2000 to June 2010 Terry worked for the city of Shafer, Minnesota as a Public Works Supervisor. It began as simply mowing their lawn before that and full-time maintenance; to working for the city full time as their Public Works Supervisor. He enjoyed working for the city very much.
Terry retired from work in 2010 and enjoyed many years at a lake cottage he and his life partner purchased together on the Horseshoe Chain of Lakes in Richmond, Minnesota and going on many trips riding their Harley Davidson Road King together they had. He enjoyed many days and nights of fishing and bonfires. He took a trip to Sturges and Mount Rushmore on the Harley and enjoyed many day trips with friends and family.
Throughout his life education and safety were very important to Terry. He was a lifeguard in his early days, on the National Safety Council of Defense Driving Campaign, and volunteered as a Certified Gun Safety Training Instructor for the state of Minnesota for over ten years. He also earned an Associate Arts Degree and continued his education whenever he could. Terry spent 30 plus years in the Lapidary Arts of gold and silversmithing and was a published poet. He would pass on his knowledge whenever he had the opportunity. He loved dancing and spent much of his time outdoors. He especially loved teaching the art of fishing, hunting, drafting drawings, and puzzling to his children and grandchildren. Terry was a great instructor, mentor and friend. He will be sorely missed by many.
