Terry Don Mackey, 82, of Garfield, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at Mercy Hospital in Rogers, Arkansas, on Friday May 31, 2024, after a two year battle with cancer. Born on March 20, 1942, in Aurora, Missouri, Terry's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family, his country, and his love for the open road.
Raised in the close-knit community of Galena, Missouri, Terry graduated from high school with a sense of pride and purpose. He went on to serve his country with honor and distinction in the United States Navy from 1962 until 1966, an experience that instilled in him a deep sense of duty and resilience. After his military service, Terry embarked on a lifelong career as a truck driver, a role that suited his love for travel and his independent spirit. For over thirty years, he was a respected driver for Walmart, where his reliability and work ethic were well-known and appreciated by his colleagues and peers.
Terry's life was not all work; he had a passion for the outdoors that was as vast as the landscapes he traversed. He grew up as a guide on the river, a testament to his intimate knowledge of the water and his skill in navigating its courses. Fishing was not just a hobby for Terry; it was a way of life, a peaceful pursuit that brought him joy and tranquility. His adventurous spirit also found expression in 4-wheeling, an activity that allowed him to explore and enjoy nature's beauty.
At home, Terry's heart was full of love for his wife and his beloved dog, Buck. He was a devoted husband to Tammy Mackey, whom he married on December 30, 1990. Their partnership was one of mutual respect and deep affection, and together they built a life filled with laughter and cherished moments. Additional survivors include his two sons, Jonathan Mackey and Terry Don Mackey, Jr., a stepdaughter, Jessica Shrader, six grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Malba (Ragsdale) Mackey, his brothers, Dennis and Harold Mackey, and his sister, Wanda Whitted.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024 from 4-6:00 p.m. at Ozark Funeral Home in Anderson, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorials are being directed to the American Cancer Society c/o the funeral home.
