Thelma “Josie” Rains, 90, of New Castle passed away peacefully at Glen Oaks Health Campus on Wednesday October 22, 2025. She was born on July 5, 1935, in Glasgow, KY to the late Vergil Smith and Marie “Melton” White.
Josie’s greatest joy in life was her granddaughters and her great grandchildren. Her world literally revolved around all of them in every aspect. She was an avid bowler and golfer in her younger years. Josie was a longtime member of Sulphur Springs Christian Church where she faithfully loved the Lord.
She is survived by her loving children, Scott (Dorothy K.) Rains of Knightstown and Cindy (Mike) Skinner of New Castle; granddaughters, Mandy Miller of Noblesville, Pamela Griffin of New Castle and Stacy Engle of New Castle; great-grandchildren, Addison Miller of Frankton, Isla Miller of Noblesville, Dalton (Emily) Engle of New Castle and Mason Lardon of New Castle; and great-great-grandsons, Sullivan Engle and Weston Lardon; great-great- granddaughter, Soni Lane Engle; sisters, Olene Linsley and Judy Darlene (John) Bauer; along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents Josie is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene “Gene” Rains; stepdad, James White; brother, Jim White; sisters, Irne Lee and Lisa Butler.
Josie’s family would like to give special praise the all the staff at Glen Oaks Memory Care and Henry County Hospice. They truly made this difficult time in Josie’s life much more soothing for Josie and her family.
Services will be held at 2:30 pm on Monday October 27, 2025, at Hinsey-Brown Funeral Service with Pastor CJ Buskirk officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Summit Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30 pm until the time of service. Memorial contributions can be given to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital at www.stjude.org.
