Retired Command Sergeant Major Theodore William "Ted" Alwine, Sr., United States Army, 88, of Plattsburgh, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 14, 2024, at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of the North Country.
Ted was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 14, 1936, the son of Theodore and Margaret (Williams) Alwine.
Ted grew up in Philadelphia and joined the United States Army in 1953. He made the Army his career, serving with distinction until he retired in 1977. He proudly served in the Korean and Vietnam wars during his service to our country. Ted's service continued beyond retirement as a member of American Legion Post 20, the Honor Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Honor Flight volunteer.
Following his retirement from the Army, Ted and his family moved back to Philadelphia, where he worked for SEPTA for 22 years. Ted and Brigitte made Plattsburgh their home in 2008.
Ted's many hobbies included hunting, fishing, and spending time playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Brigitte Rosalia (Steinhauser) Alwine; his daughters and sons-in-law, Rosale and John, Mary and Kevin, Patty, Connie and Kevin, daughter-in-law Barbara and siblings, Raymond, and Marguerite.
Opa, as he was most affectionately known, was blessed with seven grandchildren and their spouses, Samantha and Dan, Sabrina and Michael, Corinna and Daniel, Christian, Chase, Justin and Tiffany, and Donna and Buck. Ted was blessed with 12 great-grandchildren who brought him much love and delight. In addition to his immediate family, many nieces, nephews, and extended family in Germany mourn his loss. Ted leaves a legacy of love, honor, and many cherished memories to his family.
In addition to his parents and parents-in-law, Ted was predeceased by his son, Theodore William Alwine, Jr., and sister Eleanor Reilly.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 1, 2024, at 11 AM at St. Alexander's Church, Morrisonville; with Rev. Scott Seymour, celebrating. Burial will follow in the Parish Cemetery with full Military Honors provided by the Army Honor Guard and Bagpipes by Kim Matthews. A gathering to celebrate Ted's life for family and friends will take place following burial at American Legion Post 20 in Plattsburgh.
Donations in memory of Ted may be made to Hospice of the North Country or any veteran associated charity of your choice.
