Theodore “Ted” Piper passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2025. Ted was born in Eugene, Oregon, to T.R. and Florence Piper. Though an only child, he grew up surrounded by a large and loving extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Ted joined the United States Marine Corps in 1955 and was honorably discharged in 1962 with the rank of Corporal. In 1960, he moved to Portland, Oregon, to attend Portland State University, where he met his future wife, Sophia Siaterlis, originally from Nafplion, Greece. The two were married on November 16, 1962, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Portland.
Ted went on to earn his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California and remained a proud USC alumnus throughout his life. He and Sophia raised three children—Andrew, Chris, and Kate—and built a life filled with faith, love, and community.
In 1976, Ted was transferred to Boulder, Colorado, to continue his career with IBM, where he worked until retirement. Ted valued the many opportunities his work provided and the lifelong friendships he formed along the way.
A lifelong sportsman, Ted lettered in golf in college and continued to enjoy the game well into his 80s. He also loved hiking, gardening, and spending time outdoors. After retirement, Ted and Sophia spent summers in Eugene, remaining deeply active in the Greek Orthodox Church communities in both Eugene and Boulder. They played an instrumental role in establishing the Greek Orthodox Church in Boulder and in launching the first Greek Festival there—an event that brought great success and helped fund the purchase of the church building. Ted and Sophia dedicated countless hours to supporting Greek festivals in Boulder, Denver, and Eugene over the years.
Above all, Ted loved his family. He cherished every moment with his grandchildren, Lauren and Jacob, always eager to hear about their classes, interests, and plans for the future. He took great joy in watching Lauren play soccer and Jacob play hockey.
Ted was known for his kind and gentle spirit. He had an extraordinary gift for making everyone he spoke with feel like the most important person in the room.
To say he will be greatly missed only begins to express the deep loss felt by his family and friends.
Ted is survived by his beloved wife, Sophia; sons Andrew and Chris Piper; daughter Kate Dirr (Rick Dirr); and grandchildren Lauren and Jacob Dirr, along with countless extended family members and friends who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Boulder, Colorado, followed by burial at Green Mountain Cemetery. A reception will be held after the burial at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ted’s honor to Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Boulder, Colorado.
