James Stanaway Obituary

James (Jim) Larry Stanaway, age 79, of Longview, Washington, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on October 6, 2025.

Jim was born in Seattle and spent most of his life in western Washington. He graduated from Sumner High School and went on to complete his higher education at Western Washington University and Portland State University.

A Navy veteran, Jim served during the Vietnam War and often spoke fondly of his time at sea and his travels around the world. After his service, Jim worked as a carpenter, teacher, and devoted father.

He had a lifelong love of nature, gardening, paddling, hiking, skiing, and enjoying the outdoors. Music was another of his great passions. He could often be found dancing with friends at the Catlin Grange Hall, singing in community groups such as the Barbershop Quartet and The Messiah, playing cards at the Longview Senior Center, or spending time with family on the Olympic Peninsula.

Jim is survived by his beloved partner, Charmaine Basford; his children, Ian Stanaway, Amanda Stanaway, Rose Gerdesmeier, and Breanna Dodd; his grandchildren, Amelia, Sophia, and Kai; and his sisters, Cice Lemon, Peggy Fay, and Paula Rawson.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held on November 22, 2025, in Cathlamet, Washington.
