Thomas William Armstrong, age 77 of the Mexican War Streets, passed peacefully on Sunday, August 3rd. Tom is survived and will be deeply missed by his children, Meredith Armstrong Repetto (Richard) and Andrew B. Armstrong (Elsa), grandchildren, Thomas and Alice Repetto and Hollis, Martha, and Caroline Armstrong, brother, John Armstrong, and dear friend, Jan Ban. Tom was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Marjorie Armstrong.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Tom was a graduate of Fox Chapel High School, Washington and Jefferson College, and Lehigh University, where he received his MBA. During his career as a municipal bond salesman at Mellon, PNC, and National City, he made innumerable friends and most importantly, met his wife, Marjie. Tom was a true urbanist who meaningfully and positively impacted the City of Pittsburgh by serving as a member of the City Planning Commission for 24 years, including as its chairman for 15 years. More recently, he served his beloved Pittsburgh region as a member of the board of the Allegheny County Parks Foundation.

Tom was an avid hiker who completed the Rachel Carson Trail Challenge fifteen times, including in 2018 when he proudly finished first in the "geezer division" and most recently at age 75 when he was the fastest at his age. He loved doing long walks through Frick Park and other areas of the city, including up and down some of Pittsburgh's nearly 800 sets of city-owned steps. Tom was an enthusiastic cyclist, having completed many long-distance rides with his "biker boys," including RAGBRAI in 2012 and a ride down the West Coast from Canada to Mexico in 2014. Earlier in his life, Tom was a dedicated runner, completing dozens of marathons, including the Boston Marathon and many others in under three hours.

As a longtime member of the Teutonia Männerchor, Tom loved shooting pool and collected many valuable billiards trophies. He was a zealous gardener who kept immaculate and beautifully designed gardens at each of his homes.

Most importantly, Tom was a proud and engaged husband, father, and Pop Pop who never missed an opportunity to brag about his kids and grandkids, and he made frequent trips to Philadelphia to spend time with his grandkids and support their athletic pursuits. He ensured that his Philadelphia-based grandkids had a respectable baseline knowledge of Pittsburgh sports, specifically of Roberto Clemente, Bill Mazeroski, Franco Harris, Mario Lemieux, and notable events in Pirates history. He kept them humble with sporadic reminders that Pittsburgh has more World Series, Super Bowl, and Stanley Cup championships than Philadelphia.

His family and countless friends will remember Tom for his warmth and unmatched positivity, his kindness, his humor, and his genuine interest in those around him. Tom always saw the best in others and had a unique ability to make others feel important and heard.

My dear Meredith and Andrew, you have lost your wonderful parents far too soon. Marjie saved me, as a young mother, in the War Streets, when I met her for the first time when you two were playing on the fire truck. We became fast friends, believing that being with our kiddos was more important than our career aspirations. Tom then began organizing these yearly Christmas tree chop downs; he had two tiny cars, but we had a hatchback Toyota Corolla! It could hold four trees, and Tom always had to chop a tree for someone who needed one! We would be freezing, and always bought trees way too tall! Your Mom and Dad lived life with kindness, commitment, consideration of those in need, and most of all emotionally generous. I am quite saddened to learn of your Dad's passing, and offer you my sincere sympathy. Every time I drive through Squirrel Hill, I miss your Mom; now when I go to the Northside, I will think of your Dad. Love, Patty and Paolo

Tim was and still is the perfect example of a leader. He sought out responsibilities and friendships. And maybe his greatest asset besides his family was his loyalty. Nothing validates that more than his loyalty to the Bucos and Iron City!

Meredith and Andrew you have my deepest sympathy. Tom was a long time friend going back to our days at W&J. Plus a long time neighbor on the Northside. May he rest in peace.

TA was one of the first persons I met when I started work at the Mellon Bank in 1976. From that point on our lives and careers seemed to be intertwined. I was the fortunate one in this equation because as everyone knows TA was not one of the good guys, he was one of the great guys. He was way more active than I ever could imagine: a walker, a runner, a hiker and a biker. He was a friend, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a Muni Bond Daddy. He saw early on what the Mexican War Streets could become, and he was a passionate defender of all things Pittsburgh. Baseball and the Pirates were a shared passion, and I thank him for including me in all those Home Openers he organized, a day that showed the depth and breadth of his friendships throughout the Pittsburgh area.
Heartfelt condolences to Meredith and Andrew and the grandchildren he loved so dearly. God Speed, TA!

We live in a house Tom renovated and lived in at the end of the 80s. We loved hearing his stories about our house and the neighborhood. He was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word. He will be missed. My deepest sympathies to his family.

Our condolences Andy, from the Wedners (from hockey many years ago). We saw your dad often in Squirrel Hill and he was always smiling. May his memory be for a blessing.

My sincerest condolences to the Armstrong family. As colleagues at PNC for many years, and then as loyal members of the Penguins season ticket group that spanned the end of the Igloo, the beginning of the Consol Energy Center, and three Stanley Cups (!), I knew Tom as a smart, kind, loyal and funny in his sort of low key, soft spoken way. Whether discussing the latest upcoming bond issue, city planning headaches, the financial markets, bike rides and trails, the Pens' need for a third line winger, Lehigh University, or rebuffing his relentless attempts to get me to take some of his Pirate tickets :), I always came away from my interactions with Tom with a smile on my face. Tom was kind enough to invite me, on about 10 minutes notice, to come to his house when he and Marjie were selected to have Penguins season tickets delivered by Max Talbot - said he had reserve the invitation for a fellow Lehigh man. Always looking out for me. He was a true gentleman. Rest in peace, my friend.

It was privilege to know TOM AND MARGIE.
We so wish it could have been longer. We always looked forward when they would be in Philadelphia. We were lucky to watch the grandchildren with them at their sporting events That was the best.
Not having either one them now will take some getting used to. We will hold these memories close to our heart Gus and Mary

Only knew Tom from high school which allowed me to meet his entire family. Great parents and brothers. My Mother became a friend of his Mother through church. No wonder he became such a family man and pillar of Pittsburgh society. Bob Connan
