Thomas Barto Obituary
Thomas R. Barto, age 74, of Painted Post, NY passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024, at Corning Hospital.
Tom was born September 21, 1949, in Corning, NY the son of Albert B. Barto and Anna M. Scelzo.
He was a graduate of Corning-Painted Post West High School (Class of 1967). He attended Corning Community College furthering his education in their Fire Science program and the New York State Fire Academy.
Tom spent 26 years working in retail management with SE Nichols and Jamesway Department stores. He spent 12 years as a service rep with Knowles LP Gas before retiring in 2013.
Tom was a dedicated member of the Forest View Gang Mills Fire Department. He was past Chief and 25 year member. He served as a Steuben County Deputy Fire Coordinator and New York State Fire Investigator. He was also a member of the Corning American Legion.
Tom was an avid fisherman and golfer.
He is survived by his sister Ann Kaplan, nephew Max Shapiro and niece Deborah Shapiro. He was predeceased by his father, mother, grandfather Ernest Barto, grandmother Mable Barto and sister Anne Marie Barto.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Forest View Gang Mills Fire Department at a later date. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Corning, NY.
