Brother Thomas Charles Chady CSC

Brother Thomas Charles Chady, CSC, 91, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024, at the Brother Vincent Pieau Residence, Austin, TX. Brother Thomas lived for 72 years as a professed religious Brother of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Born in Whitewater, WI, Brother Thomas entered the juniorate of the Brothers of Holy Cross in Watertown, WI, in 1948. He was received as a novice at St. Joseph Novitiate, Rolling Prairie, IN, and made his first profession of vows there in August 1952. Brother Thomas graduated from St. Edward's University, Austin, TX, in 1955. A lifelong student, he later earned master's degrees in Mathematics, Theology, Human Services, and Religious Studies. He served 57 years in ministry, with 27 of those years in Brazil. He taught at Holy Cross high schools in Indianapolis and South Bend, Indiana; and in Long Beach and Sherman Oaks, California. In 1961, he accepted an assignment to Brazil and was a co-founder of Colégio Notre Dame in Campinas, São Paulo. He served then at Colégio Dom Amando in Santarém, Para. Brother Thomas loved teaching and wrote books intended to inspire his students both in science and the love of God. His work extended beyond teaching to social and pastoral ministry. After his return to the United States in 1988, Brother Thomas served as a Mathematics instructor at St. Edwaard's University until his retirement. He greatly enjoyed participating in the St. Edward's University Orchestra, Madrigal Choir and Marichi Band. Services for Brother Thomas will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at the chapel of the Brother Vincent Pieau Residence. There will be a brief Memorial Service at 10:15 a.m., and the Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Assumption Cemetery, Austin, TX.
