Salazar Funeral Homes & Crematory - Reflections ChapelA devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather, Thomas Philip Chaves, 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2026, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfonso Chaves and Theodora Romero Chaves, and brother Jerry Chaves.
Thomas is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Carol Rhodes Chaves; children: Thomas Chaves and wife Yvette Martinez Chaves, Matthew Chaves and wife Stephanie Garcia Chaves, Danielle Chaves Stanley and husband Jean Paul Stanley, grandchildren: Kaitlyn, Samantha, Katalina, Lilia, Maya, RaeLynn, Andres, David; great-grandchild: Sylvia; sister Janice Chaves Rubi.
Born on November 5, 1943, in San Mateo, California, Thomas lived a full and vibrant life dedicated to his family, friends, community and faith in God.
Thomas proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His service exemplified his courage and commitment to others. After completing his military duty with an honorable discharge, he carried forward the values of dedication and resilience into every aspect of his life.
Thomas had a zest for life that was evident to all who knew him. He loved traveling to new places, immersing himself in music and dance, trying his luck at gambling, and sharing laughter through his endless jokes. His warm personality made him a friend to everyone he met. Whether lending a helping hand or simply brightening someone’s day with humor or kindness, Thomas was always there for those around him.
Above all else, Thomas treasured time spent with family. He was a constant source of support and love for those closest to him. His active lifestyle reflected his unwavering commitment to being present for the people he cared about most.
Thomas’s legacy is one of love, laughter, service, and generosity. May the memories of his remarkable life bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Thomas' Life Celebration will begin with a Rosary to be recited on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 10:30am at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church located at 811 Guaymas Pl NE, 87108. Mass will begin at 11:00am. Life Celebration will continue with a gathering and reception at 1:00pm at the New Mexico Veterans Memorial 1100 Louisiana Blvd SE #5009, 87108.
