Ed Davis, 88, of Wingate, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 2, 2025. He was born on November 28, 1936 to the late John Alexander Davis and Bertha Thomas Davis. He was one of five children raised on their farm in Union County, where he continued to work the fields and garden until his health declined in 2012. Ed was a walking "Farmers Almanac" and could tell you everything you needed to know about growing crops and harvesting the fields.
Ed graduated from Wingate High School, where he enjoyed being part of the basketball team. His love for sports never wavered, and he could often be found watching any sports channel available.
His love for God, his country, his family, and his community also never wavered. Ed was one of the longest living members of Midway Baptist Church in Wingate, where he was baptized in July 1951. He loved the church and his favorite back row where he often could be found each Sunday. His seat at church reflected his outlook on life - he was always humble, never sought attention, and worked behind the scenes to ensure whatever needed to be done was completed. He filled various roles in the church including treasurer, choir member, and deacon.
Ed served his country as a soldier in the Army for two years in the 1960's. While away, he always wanted to make sure his mom was cared for and well. He returned from the Army with that same mission - to care for his mother.
Ed was well known in the Wingate community as a long-time employee of the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years. In his quiet, humble way, he always made sure that the mail was delivered correctly and promptly, and customers were treated with dignity and respect. His dry humor and quick wit made him even more admired by family, friends and the community at large.
Ed's love for family was always evident. Ed never married, but his love for children was constantly displayed. From holding the little ones to playing tag with them as they grew up, he was the uncle at the Christmas gatherings who loved to play with the kids. Christmas was also special thanks to Ed's famous chocolate fudge.
In addition to his parents, Ed is pre-deceased by his sister Sarah Simpson, his brother James Davis, and his sister Ruth Stegall, as well as his nephew Wayne Stegall and niece Jean Stokely.
Survivors include his sister Doris Haigler, twelve nieces and nephews, and a host of friends.
A Celebration of Life Service for Ed will be held at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, January 7, 2025 at Midway Baptist Church, 4615 Olive Branch Road, Wingate, NC, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:00 PM until 2:45 PM in the church.
Memorials can be made to Midway Baptist Church, C/O Cemetery Fund, 4615 Olive Branch Road, Wingate, NC 28174.
Mr. Davis' family would like to thank the medical professionals who assisted him in recent years. They also would like to thank the staff of White Oak at Waxhaw for their care.
