Thomas DiLuigi Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chas. Verheyden, Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service - Grosse Pointe on Jan. 30, 2026.
Thomas Anthony DiLuigi, son of Duilio and Virginia (Housey) DiLuigi, passed away suddenly at the age of 73 on January 28, 2026. His death was unexpected, but his life was rich with love, laughter, generosity, and beauty. He was born on December 10, 1952, in Detroit, Michigan to Duilio and Virginia (Housey) DiLuigi.

For more than 30 years, Thomas had a master's degree in education and taught elementary school in the inner city of Detroit. His classroom was a place where children felt safe, challenged, and known. Long after leaving his classroom, former students wrote to him with heartfelt notes, crediting him with changing their lives.

Thomas came from a loud, loving Lebanese-Italian family full of strong opinions and big personalities. In the middle of it all, he was Switzerland-the peacemaker with blond hair and blue eyes. He never took sides, choosing instead to remind each of us of the others' strengths and beauty. The oldest brother and second-born of six children, he was a steady presence: a great brother, a wonderful son, and a deeply loyal friend. His passing marks the third profound loss among siblings in the past five years.

Thomas found enormous joy in his pugs, whom he spoiled shamelessly. Those high-bred, snorting, wrinkled balls of fur brought him pure happiness, and anyone who knew Thomas knew exactly how loved they were.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Duilio and Virginia (Housey) DiLuigi, and sisters Cherie DiLuigi and Laurice Azouri-Zakowich.

He is survived by his sister, Renee DiLuigi Holme, and brothers Joseph (Jill) DiLuigi and James (Krista) DiLuigi.

A memorial visitation will take place on Thursday, February 12, 2026, from 3:00-7:00 PM at Chas Verheyden, Inc., 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park. The time of sharing will begin at 6:00 PM until the time of the rosary at 6:45pm.

Funeral services will take place Friday, February 13, 2026. The family will greet guests from 12:30 PM until the time of mass at 1:00 PM at St. Bonaventure Monastery, 1740 Mt. Elliott St., Detroit, MI 48207.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society at 20542 Harper Ave, Harper Woods, MI 48225 https://www.gpaas.org/donate.
