Thomas "Doc" Dougherty,77, of Glen Rock, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023, at WellSpan York Hospital. He was the devoted husband of Ellen L. (Smith) Dougherty for 51 years. Doc was born on February 8, 1946, in York, to the late Nellie (Bosley) and Thomas Dougherty. He was a 1965 graduate of Susquehannock High School. After graduation, he joined the Marines and served in the Vietnam War from 1965 through 1969. Thereafter, Doc worked for AMP/TYCO, Inc. for 25 years before retiring. While at AMP/TYCO, he was a member of the NIMRODS. Doc was also a lifetime member of the Glen Rock American Legion Post #403, where he had served as commander and treasurer; lifetime member of the New Freedom VFW Post #7012; and the Glen Rock Historical Society. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Glen Rock, where he served as Deacon and Trustee. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting; playing fast pitch softball with his Maryland Concrete team; he played football in high school, while serving in the Marines, and semi-pro ball for the Red Lion Lions. He had also assisted SYC girls softball teams and SYC football teams for many years, and enjoyed running the chains at the high school football games. More recently, he enjoyed watching westerns, Penn State Football, Baltimore Ravens, and the Baltimore Orioles.
Doc is survived by his loving wife Ellen; his two daughters, Carrie Spurlock and Julie Dougherty; two sisters, Jennifer Jasinski and husband John, and Kathleen McDaniel and husband Rick; and his three grandchildren, SGT Shawn Spurlock, US Marines, Sara Spurlock and Ryan Dougherty as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one infant son, Shawn Dougherty.
A public visitation will take place on Thursday, July 20, from 10:00am until a memorial service begins at 12:00pm at Trinity United Church of Christ, 27 Manchester St., Glen Rock, PA 17327. A private burial will take place immediately after the service.
