Dear Farrell family and friends,

I'm a court reporter. I've had the
pleasure of working with Tom many,
many times. When I saw his name on
the notice, I was always happy because
he was such a pleasant man to work with.
I wish I would have known him better.
My prayers to his family, and may he rest in peace.

To the Farell family,
I am writing to express my deepest sympathy to your family. It may seem a long time removed from the fact, but I was traveling just this past weekend to JMU for Parents Weekend. We were surfing the radio channels when I heard the unbelieveable, that Tom Farrell had been killed...
I was hoping that I had misheard the news item and that perhaps it was Tom who had gotten the conviction of a hit and run driver... but sadly, when I go home, I found the truth.

I was fortunate to work with Tom on several cases. I am a nurse in Richmond. He was kind and compassionate, not the qualities are often ascribed to an attorney.

I know of his love for family and his daughters as our children were close in age.

No words can comfort when there is a sudden loss, but I do hope that you will gain some measure of comfort by the knowledge that Tom touched many lives and he will live on the acts of kindness he performed.

Sincerely,
Laura Savage RN

Dear Farrell Family:

I knew Tom in law school. We worked together in the same office in the summer of 1986. One day I was having a very tough time and was near tears. Tom very kindly went out to lunch with me and talked to me about my problem and made me feel better. Twenty two years later I still remember and greatly appreciate his kindness and caring. He was clearly a man of great character and compassion.

I was so saddened to read of his death in my alumni magazine. Please accept my sincere and heartfelt sympathy to you at the loss of Tom.

Dear cousin Connie, Elizabeth and Katie, Aunt Mary, and Uncle Bill:

I am sorry this has taken me so long to write. I have not known what to say. There are no words to encompass how sorry I am; how amazingly loved cousin Tom was. I cannot imagine what you all are going through.

Our family wishes yours the most peace possible and is thinking of you and thinking of Tom. I have spent a lot of time, lately, thinking about when he used to visit my family and I in Virginia when I was small. Even when I was three I remember thinking he was so handsome and kind.

Every meeting with cousin Tom over the years has been a happy one. He smiled so much, and he listened so much. He was a great comfort to everyone at Grandpa Joe's funeral. He was a wonderful man.

I cannot imagine what you all are going through. If there is anything we can do to help, any time, please feel free to call on us.

Please know we are thinking of you.

Love,

Mrs. Farrell,
As the judge for Tom's med mal case in Russell County this past October, I really enjoyed getting to know him. We had a hung jury (6-1 in Tom's favor) so we had alot of time to talk. He talked alot about you and his girls. He was an excellent lawyer but an even better person. I am so sorry for your loss. I am glad that God gave us the chance to cross paths.

To Tom's family,

I graduated with Tom from Honeoye Falls-Lima Highschool. I well remember Tom as a friendly, easy-going guy. I enjoyed hearing the letter he sent to our 20th Highschool Reunion. When I was visiting in New York, I would occassionally ask if anyone had heard how he was doing. I always heard great things. I am so sorry for your loss.

Connie, Liz and Katie,
I am so sad to hear of Tom’s passing. I will always remember the kindness he showed my parents, (your neighbors,) Roger and Mildred Lorden. He sounds like the consummate good guy. He obviously served his Lord by serving his community and leading by example for all.

I remember when Tom came to Oakey’s for Daddy’s viewing and Tom and I stood around and talked about—well--- what else do two runners who hardly know each other talk about---running! It is a very pleasant memory.

Tom will be with all of us as we take to the roads. Condolences from the Charlottesville running community.

Dear Connie, Liz and Katie:

Memories in the Heart

Feel no guilt in laughter, he knows how much you care
Feel no sorrow in a smile that he’s not here to share
You cannot grieve forever, he would not want you to
He’d hope that you can carry on, the way you always do
So talk about the good times and the ways you showed you cared
The days you spent together, all the happiness you shared

A word someone may say
Will suddenly recapture a time, an hour, a day
That brings him back as clearly as though he were still here
And fills you with the feelings that he is always near
For when you keep these moments, you will never be apart
Tom will live forever locked safe within your heart -

Dear Connie, Katie, and Elizabeth,
My heart is broken when I think about the pain that you must all be going through right now. I pray that you will receive comfort from knowing how much Tom meant to so many and how our lives will never be the same without him. As with so many others running/exercising with Tom was such an enjoyment. He was enthusiastic and fun. He talked about what his girls were doing. He was so proud of both of you. He truly was one of the most honorable man who was a servant to so many. Watching him coach softball league and any other sporting events his girls were in, he was there. Even at all dance recitals.
Connie you are honestly the strongest woman that I have ever known. Your family was number one and you demonstrated that to me so often. You have the strength to carry on for your children now. But know that you have friends and you don't have to carry it all alone. Many people care and will be there for you. All my love,

Tom and I worked out at the same times for many, many years. We would see each other across the road and yell a greeting as we were running or spend some time talking about the day's run when we were together in the RAC. What I will remember him most for, however, is the hand he extended me when I lost my job. He invited me to attend his networking group and gave me the opportunity to meet a variety of business people. It wasn't something he had to do. It was just who he was. You have my deepest sympathy in this very difficult time.

As a former paralegal within the firm of WootenHart for 2+yrs, Tom "as he liked to be called", always had either a pleasant passing remark or a hearty laugh to share. He will be missed by many. My deepest condolences to his family and may God touch your hearts with his hands of comfort.

Dear Farrell family,
I was shocked to hear about your loss, I would like to tell you from an outsider’s viewpoint the lasting impression that Tom made on myself. I own the advertising agency that worked with Tom and Brad on the firms branding. Everyone at my firm was struck at how wonderful and genuine a person Tom was. Think about this for a moment, a person shows their true self when they are deep into a business day and making decisions that are important to the business. Tom was never harsh and could make his views easily understood without making you feel off the mark. Many people who possess his mental abilities are not so kind and gentle. Obviously to serve in a firm of such stature, one has to have this level of intelligence, but to also possess his level of compassion is a rare and valued gift. With Tom, you knew he was a brilliant man when he spoke and he made you feel good to be in his presence. To have a gentle nature, a natural approachability and a kind soul really are the traits that everyone one of us can look up to. People like Tom are the ones we want to be near us, because we know they will put our best interests before their own. When you first met Tom you felt like you knew him all along, the kind of man that deserved admiration, affection and respect. A gifted handsome man, who always carried a smile, quick to a handshake and first to ask, how are you, is life treating you well?
Know this I have not met you, but I do know you. Because this kind of man leaves lasting impressions on lives and I am sure you are a reflection of his values and kindness. Keep him close in your hearts and your minds. He made a deep and lasting impression on my life, and I will long remember him.
God bless you and keep you, may he lift up your hearts and grant you comfort both now and into the future.
Jim

My heart goes out to Mrs. Farrell and their daughters. I worked at WootenHart for a short time and my desk was very close to Tom's office. Even in the busiest of times, he always had a "hello" and a smile for everyone he passed. For the past 7 years, I have worked on the other side of a lot of cases which Tom handled. I will miss talking to Tom. My prayers are with the entire Farrell family that God will grant you the peace and comfort that you so badly need in this time of loss. The Roanoke community has truly lost a good man!

Connie and girls,

Tom was a special Dad, father and person. I knew him to be that by running with him over the years. He shared about his family frequently. He is missed by all who knew him. May you seek God's peace which passeth all understanding during this time.

I wish to express my very deep sorrow and condolences to your family for your tragic loss. Tom and I have worked together as malpractice defense lawyers for longer than I can remember. I greatly respected him as a lawyer, an advocate for his clients, and as a gentleman at all times. He conducted his life in a way worthy of admiration.
