Thomas Calvin "Tom" Gowell

Thomas Calvin "Tom" Gowell, 82, passed away in his home on February 19, 2025, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Born on March 13, 1942, in Shelby, Michigan, Tom grew up with his parents and two sisters in nearby Hart, where he graduated from Hart High School in 1960. Tom pursued higher education at Michigan State University, earning a bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1964 and a master's degree in Business Administration in 1968. His career took him to several places in the United States and even to Newfoundland, Canada, where he worked as a construction manager before eventually settling in Bluffton, South Carolina. There, he embarked on a new venture by opening a storage facility with his wife in 1987.

Tom had an adventurous spirit and a relaxed demeanor, complemented by his dry sense of humor. He found joy in traveling across the United States in his pickup truck and was an avid supporter of Michigan State football and basketball, both watching games from home and attending them in person. He also enjoyed listening to audiobooks, skiing, biking and hiking scenic trails, and taking long walks on the beach with his beloved dogs.

He is survived by his son Ken (Melissa), daughter Montana, younger sister Dorothy, grandchildren Kylie (Matt), Madison, and Jace, as well as his great-granddaughter Leighton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. His faithful dog Summer was always by his side. Tom was predeceased by his parents Ken and Ethel, his younger sister Bobbie Jo and his son Todd. His dogs Jet, Jessie, Kayla and Sally were also waiting for him at heaven's gate.

A celebration of life will be organized later in the spring to honor Tom's memory. May those who knew him find comfort in their cherished memories of him.
