Thomas Harvey, Jr. Obituary

Thomas Brantley Harvey, Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday evening, October 28, 2025, in his home. The son of the late Thomas B. Harvey Sr. and Agnes Irene Gibson Harvey, he grew up in the town of Yemassee. He served in the United States Army for 2 years and was stationed in Alabama where he became a lifetime Alabama Crimson Tide fan. He was also in the Army Reserves for 4 years.

Thomas was the beloved husband of Jane Carole Marshall Harvey for 63 years. He met the love of his life through Johnny and Mary Youmans (Jane’s sister). He always told her she was the best thing that ever happened to him.

Thomas was a hobbyist photographer, woodworker, and jack of all trades. He enjoyed using his skills for his family. Especially woodworking with his children.

Thomas, known at the plant as “Tom”, built a successful career at Westinghouse, International Paper, and Nevamar as a Senior Project Engineer before retiring after 47 years. He was part of the building of Westinghouse plants in Pendleton and Puerto Rico.

Thomas was a man of great faith and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. He often spoke of lighting the lanterns at Mt. Olive with his father and grandfather. He was baptized in the Combahee River while attending Yemassee Baptist. He served as a deacon at Hopewell First Baptist Church, on the maintenance committee, and was a Sunday School teacher for many years. He was also on the planning and building committee when the new church was built. He was respected by his peers and church family for his strength, dedication, integrity, and intelligence.

Thomas had a quiet confidence and was very even keeled. Rarely raising his voice in anger. When he spoke those around him listened.

His grandchildren brought him so much joy. Over the years he transported children and grandchildren to school in the same green Pontiac Lemans. He fixed flat tires, helped with math homework, and a thousand other little things to show his love. As his grandchildren grew, he enjoyed loving on his great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all.

Surviving, in addition to his loving wife are: his children, Carole McGrath of Nixville, Jeffrey Harvey and his wife Tammy of Nixville, and Brian Harvey and his wife April of Varnville; grandchildren, Lauren (David), Megan (Derryl), Morgan (Clayton), Andrew, Brantley, William, Bailey, Alana (John Hampton) and Somers; great grandchildren, Allison, Brooklyn, Trinity, Mason, and Sawyer; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Brian Thomas Harvey; son-in-law, Brian McGrath; sister, Marian Fender; and brothers, Jimmy Harvey, Wade Harvey, and Claude Edward Harvey.

Funeral services will be held 2 o’clock, Sunday afternoon, November 2, 2025, at Hopewell First Baptist Church, 6404 Hopewell Road, Hampton. Interment with military honors will follow in Hampton Cemetery, Holly Street East, Hampton.

The family would also like to send a special thank you to Sylvia Priester and Amedisys Hospice for their care of Thomas during his final days.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 4 until 6 at THE BRICE W. HERNDON AND SONS FUNERAL HOMES AND CREMATORY, VARNVILLE-HAMPTON CHAPEL, 1074 Yemassee Highway, Varnville, South Carolina, 29944. Visit the guestbook online at: www.briceherndonfuneralhome.com.
