Thomas Hutchinson Obituary Thomas Allen Hutchinson, known affectionately as Tom or Hutch to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2025, at the age of 86 in Paoli, PA. Born on January 26, 1939, in Houtzdale, PA, Tom's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his loved ones, a strong work ethic, and a warm sense of humor that brought joy to all who knew him.
Tom graduated from Houtzdale Woodward Brisbin High School and went on to study accounting at the Altoona School of Commerce. His studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the US Army, where he served his country with honor. After completing his military service, Tom embarked on a successful career with Gulf Oil in Philadelphia, PA. He remained there until the refinery's closure, at which point he pursued certification in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. Tom's skilled hands and technical expertise led him to work as an HVAC technician for Devon Air, Meridian Bank, and Wilgro Services, from where he eventually retired.
Throughout his life, Tom was a pillar of strength and support for his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Ruthann Hutchinson, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Tom was a devoted father to Heather Lashley, Mark Hutchinson, and Holly Palka. His role as a father-in-law was embraced with equal warmth and affection, welcoming David Lashley and Jessica Hutchinson into the family fold. Tom's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Noelle Lashley, Stephanie Lashley, and Nolan Palka, all of whom he adored and took great pride in.
An avid outdoorsman, Tom relished the time spent hunting, fishing, and camping. His love for nature was only matched by his passion for spending time with his family and watching sporting events. Tom's laughter often filled the room, and his knack for storytelling kept his family and friends entertained for hours. He was also known for his generous spirit, always willing to lend a helping hand or share his expertise in any way he could.
A veritable MacGyver, friends and family will fondly remember Tom for his handy skills, and ability to fix the unfixable. His generosity extended beyond his immediate circle, as he was always ready to help neighbors and friends. Tom's sense of humor was one of his most memorable traits; he had a unique ability to find the funny side of life's challenges and to share that gift of laughter with others.
Tom's presence was a source of comfort and joy in the lives of his brothers and sisters, children, many nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends. His daily conversations on the phone were a testament to the strong connections he maintained throughout his life. His voice, filled with warmth and affection, will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, Tom is survived by his sister, Hilda Mae Hutchinson of Houtzdale, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hilda (Hagyard) and Jonathan E. Hutchinson; two sisters, Margaret (Peg) Shimel and Mary Sleigh; and two brothers, Jonathan and Robert Hutchinson.
As we bid farewell to Thomas Allen Hutchinson, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by love, laughter, and the countless memories he created with those around him. Tom's legacy of kindness, humor, and generosity will continue to inspire and influence his family and friends for generations to come. He will be remembered not just for the life he led but for the love he gave and the happiness he spread. Tom's journey through life was a testament to the enduring power of a positive spirit and the impact one person can have on so many.
Tom's life will be recognized in a Celebration of Life at 11AM on May 17th at the First Presbyterian Church of Houtzdale and internment with honor guard at the Odd Fellows Cemetary in Brisbin, PA. A luncheon will follow at the Houtzdale American Legion. His memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of his family and friends, and the stories of his life will be told and retold, keeping his spirit alive for years to come.
