Thomas J. Kallal

Thomas J. Kallal, 90, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026 at his home in Libertyville, IL. He was a beloved, kind, generous and caring husband, father and grandfather. Tom was born December 2, 1935, in Chicago and raised in Cicero, IL. He and his family have been Libertyville residents since 1961.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas E. & Mildred Kallal and by 2 brothers, John & William Kallal. Surviving is his wife of 66 years, Helen Kallal; 2 sons, Thomas A. Kallal & John P. (Donna) Kallal and by 2 grandchildren, Joseph & Riley.

Tom was a United States Army veteran stationed in Fort Knox, KY and was part of NASA's Project Mercury, which sent the first primate into space. He received his bachelor's degree in chemistry from Loyola University and managed a clinical chemistry laboratory supporting drug development at Abbott Laboratories for 35 years.

His greatest passion was his grandchildren. He loved spending time with them and watching them grow. His other passion was music (especially jazz) and spent many hours listening to all types.

Tom was generous with his time, knowledge and expertise, providing counsel to family and friends. He was never done learning and spent many hours increasing his knowledge of the world.

Tom also enjoyed golfing, cooking and traveling, especially during the winter months, to Gulf Shores, AL.

A visitation will be held from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at Burnett-Dane Funeral Home, 120 W. Park Ave. in Libertyville. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with interment following to Lakeside Cemetery.
