On Friday, September 5, 2025, Thomas (Tom) Alex Lane, 75 of Marlinton, departed this life for his heavenly home from the ICU Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem, VA. He had been a resident of Pocahontas Center for the past 14 months.
Born January 30, 1950, in Marlinton, he was a son of the late Alex and Louise Cochran Lane.
Tom graduated from Marlinton High School in 1968. He played on the team that won the 1967 W.VA State Football Championship for Marlinton. He attended W.VA. Tech and graduated with a degree in Business Management.
In 1973, Tom moved to Baltimore, MD. Where he was employed with Chevron Oil Company, but he missed the hills of W.VA., so he moved back to Marlinton, and began employment with VA electric Power Company in Mt. Grove, VA. In 1997 Tom accepted a position of Deputy Assessor for Pocahontas County with Dolan Irvin. He was elected Pocahontas Assessor in 2012. Tom retired in 2020.
Tom married the love of his life in 1972, Mariam Rachel Slaven Lane. They celebrated 52 years together.
He loved to hunt and fish. He also loved watching the mountaineers his favorite football team. He loved being outdoors. Tom, Rachel, his brothers, and nephews hunted deer every fall.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only child, a son, Jason Thomas Lane.
Tom is survived by his wife Rachel, granddaughter, Alexandria Lane, brothers, Delmas Lane, Steven Lane and wife Linda, sisters, Phyllis Clarkson and husband Bill, and Betty Thompson and many nephews and nieces.
Tom was a kind, caring person. He loved all little animals and adopted many that crossed his path. He remained close to his Mother & Dad, brothers, and sisters, all his life. They all loved him so very much.
Funeral services will be held Noon on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Lantz Funeral Home with Pastor Sam Felton officiating. Burial will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 9, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
The family would like to extend thanks for compassionate care provided by Lewis Gale Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospice.
