Thomas Andrew Laverghetta, 56, of
Virginia Beach, VA, passed away peacefully at his home on February 1, 2025. Born in Syracuse, NY, Tom dedicated his life to service, as an Eagle Scout, in his naval career and in his faith. A proud graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he went on to earn his master's degree from MIT while serving as a naval officer. After retiring from the U.S. Navy, he continued his work in the maintenance and repair field as a civilian.
A self-proclaimed math geek, Tom had a passion for numbers, movies, and cooking shows. An avid cyclist and cross-country enthusiast, he often embarked on long bike rides and even competed in triathlons in his younger years. His strong Catholic faith was central to his life, and he was a devoted member of the JEBLCFS Chapel.
Above all Tom was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He shared 31 wonderful years of marriage with his wife, Kimberley "Kim" Laverghetta, with whom he built a beautiful life. Their enduring love story began with a whirlwind romance, that grew deeply through separations filled with love letters, poems and endless phone calls, until finally they were wed. In addition to Kim he is survived by his cherished children: Francesca Laverghetta, Thomas Joseph Laverghetta and his wife Jessica, along with their daughter Olivia Grace (7 ½ months) and their baby on the way; Samuel Laverghetta and Isabella Laverghetta. He also leaves behind his parents, Susan Ricks and Thomas Samuel Laverghetta, his stepmother Patricia, and his birth mother Carol Sprague, 10 sisters; 5 brothers; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends.
Tom was predeceased by his stepfather, Micheal Ricks, brother, Todd Havener, and birth father, Bill Johst.
A visitation will be held from 5:00pm-7:00pm on Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at Altmeyer Funeral Homes, 5033 Rouse Dr, VB, VA 23462. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, February 13, 2025 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 5345 Virginia Beach Blvd, VB, VA 23462. Tom will be laid to rest with full military honors at Albert G. Horton Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA. His legacy of love, service, and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
