He was an ardent Michigan fan and always looked forward to watching their football games. He was also a New York Yankee fan. Tom will be fondly remembered as a loyal and devoted family man and friend who loved the camaraderie and friendships he made through his participation in sports.

Mary Jane, Rob and I wish to extend our heartfelt sympathy to you and the children. Tom was a wonderful human being and a great inspiration to many children, especially in hockey. We both credit Tom with giving our son Jeff the confidence he needed to succeed in a very competitive sport. Each time Jeff reaches another milestone in this sport, we think of Tom and the Mighty Ducks House League team and then the Mite B team. I doubt Jeff will ever be as inspired again as he was in those first few key years by another coach. I realize that nothing will ever replace him in the eyes of you and the children but you can rest assured that his spirit lives on in the many children he touched as a coach. Sincerly, Donna and Robert Smolens

Mary Jane - We were shocked and saddened to read of Tom's passing. I really only knew him through Darien Youth Hockey and Wesport Youth Lacrosse - and therefore my memory will always be of an athletic guy, full of energy, with a smile on his face. Our thoughts and prayers are with you - we wish you and your children all the best.

Adam - I told Lane about your Dad's passing last night when I saw the notice in the Westport News and he wanted me to send his condolences. We both realized the last time we saw you and your Dad was when the four of us played golf down at Longshore - it doesn't seem too long ago and we didn't even know he'd gotten ill. Even then you were already growing into a fine young man and going forward you still have the ideal role model in your Dad when you think about the kind of adult you'd like to be.

Mary Jane, Aaron, Adam and Amy-
Words cannot express how sorry we are for your loss. Tom will be missed by everyone. He was one of the few gentlemen in the game of hockey (and away from the ice). He always stood up for the underdog and was one of the most encouraging dads out there. Your family has always been viewed by ours as being full of love and good standards. Your loss is everyones. God bless you! Love, The Mistrettas
