Thomas Arthur Madden, M.D., age 103, beloved husband of Donna Bergen, M.D., died peacefully at his home in Skokie, IL, USA, on Monday, December 30, 2024.
Born in Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England, his mother, Gladys Vaughan, was a teacher, and his father, Albert Edward Madden, a draftsman for a large engineering company. Tom attended Bishop Vesey Grammar School and Christ Church, Oxford, reading Modern Languages, followed by medicine at Guy's Hospital in London.
As a medical student in London during The Blitz, he delivered babies there and in outlying areas where mothers had been sent for safety. After WWII, he worked for international student cooperation in health, sports, and education, receiving the Médaille d'Or de l'Education Physique et du Sport, République Française.
Devoted to clinical practice and community medicine, he chose his first medical practice in London's East End, followed by a National Health Service teaching practice in Peckham, South London. In 1975, he was awarded the British Medical Association (BMA) Board of Science and Education's Sir Charles Hastings Prize for research in primary care as well as the BMA's Charles Oliver Hawthorne Essay Prize.
Moving to the US in 1978 to marry, he joined one of the early health maintenance organizations, affiliated with Rush University in Chicago. Throughout 18 years of patient care, teaching, and clinical research, he published and lectured on health care policy, community medicine, and public health. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He retired as Professor Emeritus of Preventive Medicine at Rush University.
Tom loved his family, caring for patients, teaching the compassionate and skilled practice of medicine, reading English and French literature, writing poetry, gardening, and travelling in Europe and America. He will be remembered as a beloved physician by his patients, an erudite associate by his colleagues, a treasured, charming friend by many, and a loving and loved life-partner by his wife.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Freddy, and is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Sarah Stephenson and Susan and Michael Madden; his grandchildren, Hannah and Timothy Lindsay; and his great-grandchildren, Jacob and Summer Lindsay.
A memorial will be planned in the near future.
Memorial contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD, 21741, USA, (doctorswithoutborders.org).

As Tom's English son by his first wife Mignon, my chief memory of him was that he was a very peaceable man who was so dedicated to his NHS patients in his GP surgeries at Bow and in Peckham, that we saw less of him than we might have liked. It was great when he met Donna, because they were much better suited. Of course, he will be sadly missed by us all.

Although I wasn´t brought up by my father, he was constantly in touch, sending me beautiful dolls when aged 2 and 3 , I was too young to care for properly . Then books; amongst many, the Moonintroll stories and later, The Lost World of the Kalahari, by Laurence Van de Post.
My father, who will be massively missed, gave me a passion books and travel.
In this photo, a day when I was aged 9 and vividly remember, we´re playing with plantains. A game rather like conkers, who can hit the other first.
