It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Thomas (Tom) Richard McCarthy, 93, of Sarasota, Florida on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by his loving family in the comfort of his own home.
Born on November 21, 1931, in Harlan, Iowa, Tom was the youngest of nine children. Tom served in the U.S. Army and attended Iowa State University, earning a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. Tom married Mary McTaggart on her birthday (June 28th) in 1958 in Emerson, Nebraska. Together, they had five children (Diane, Michele, Nancy, Kevin and Mark) and enjoyed a life full of adventure and love. He worked at Sangamo Electric in Springfield, Illinois before being transferred to Sarasota, Florida in 1978. Tom was an avid golfer and enjoyed sailing. He was a devout Catholic and active member of Incarnation Catholic Church. In addition to touching lives as a husband and father, he served and volunteered at Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul, and the soup kitchen throughout the years.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years. He is survived by 4 children, Diane Barber, Michele Phillips (Eric), Nancy Chupp and Kevin McCarthy (Jessica); 12 grandchildren, Amy, Justin, Ryan, Meghan, Kevin, Nicholas, Jeremy, Joshua, Jordan, Alexa, Gilbert and Grant; 13 great grandchildren and many other relatives.
Tom's legacy of love, integrity, and generosity will endure through the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
