Thomas Charles Meditz, SR., 84, of Jackson, died Friday, July 7, 2023, at Piedmont Newnan Hospital.
Thomas was born August 26, 1938 to Charles Thomas and Helen Meditz in New York, NY, their only child. He graduated from Babylon High School in 1956. On a blind, double date in 1959, he met Jeanne Nebot and later that very night, asked her to marry him.
In 1960, he joined the military and was first stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA. Then in 1961 he received transfer orders to Frankfurt, Germany where he would be stationed for 9 months, before leaving the military as a Sergeant Specialist E-4.
Tom was also a Volunteer Fire Fighter, first in West Babylon, NY, then when he was stationed in Augusta, GA and also while residing in Copiague, NY.
After the military, the family moved into a two-story house in Copiague, New York on Long Island where Tom worked for British Airways {BA} Airlines. In 1973, the family moved to Miami, Florida transferring with British Airways to the Miami International Airport. In the late 70's he took early retirement from BA and began a furniture refinishing business at Cauley Square Historic Village in South Miami, along with assisting his wife with her antique furniture business. The family small business grew again when they added Chair Caning. As times changed, the family business ended and Tom would return to the Airlines industry as a freight forwarded. From 1988 to 1993, they lived in a 1932 Spanish style house in Miami Springs next to the Miami Airport that was, to say the least, a fixer upper. This is where Tom and his daughter Pam began their love for home repair. In 1993, Tom and his wife Jeanne would transfer one final time to Atlanta, GA. His love for fishing and wanting to be near a lake, their final home would be down the street from High Falls State Park in Jackson, GA.
Tom was married for 61 years, until his wife passed in December 2020. They had three children, Thomas C. Jr, Mary and Pam. Mary would go on to nursing school and became a Registered Nurse working for many years at Miami Children's Hospital. Pam attended local colleges and graduated with a BA in Business and worked in retail for Byrons/Uptons Department Stores and then for GA Department of Natural Resources for over twenty years. Tom Jr. is a Deacon of his church, a family man with six children, and works for a medical equipment company traveling around the US.
Tom is survived by his children.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at 10:30 AM with Ken Bishop officiating. Burial will be in Rock Springs Cemetery.
