Dr. Mellichamp touched so many peoples lives through his life long work with plants. I took the Native Plant Certificate classes and volunteered at the gardens. His gardens at UNC Charlotte are a great tribute to his love of nature. He created many followers who will miss him.

I just learned of Dr. Larry's death, and my heart goes out to his family, friends and colleagues.
I didn't know him well, but very much enjoyed learning from him in Native Plant Certificate classes and on field trips. His knowledge seemed boundless, and it always felt like a privilege to be in his class.

So sorry to hear of Larry´s passing. I met Larry when I started working at UNC Charlotte in 1996. Running into Larry usually occurred while walking through the Botanical Gardens where he could be found most often. His dedication to the gardens and teaching is truly inspirational.

Joanne, Sorry to hear about your brother Larry. I knew him when he was on "The Southern Lawn and Garden Line" on 106.1 and WAVO 1150. I was the producer of that show for many years. He was a frequent guest on the show when Ted Caudle hosted it. Sometimes, Larry would be the guest host. I knew you when you attended Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church. My deepest sympathy goes out to your family.

Larry was my mentor. I loved to walk with him through gasrdens, listening as he dropped more knowledge and wisdom in an hour than I could read in a year. His NC Native Plants Certificate Program at UNCC revealed his knowledge, his willingness to share it and his warmth as a human being. He was an invaluable resource at Historic Rosedlae. The rehabilitation of its gardens ould nevder hasve happened without him. I will miss him greatly.

The first time I read his book `The Winter Garden´ I was hooked. I incorporated many aspects of it on my own garden.
I had to privilege of getting to know Larry when I worked at UNCC and it was a highlight of my horticultural journey. He was a master of plants and a good guy. He will be missed .

Larry has been a lifelong friend, from elementary school, high school, Church and our community of Hickory Grove. He will be sadly missed. His father and my father were good friends. He was an extremely generous man. I am blessed to have one of his autographed books and he has given me several very unusual plants and to this day I look out in my yard and I see them and think finally of all our childhood memories. Much love goes out to his family. We were all blessed to know him. Thank you Larry for all the contributions to the Botanical world you will be missed.

I have known Larry since Hickory Grove Elementary school. We grew up in Hickory Grove Methodist Church; his Dad was my first Boy Scout leader. Larry was a wonderful person. Though I never had his classes, I am sure that he was a tremendous teacher. God has blessed his life, and we a going to miss him!
