Thomas Gerard Oftring

August 19, 1960 - August 22, 2025

Thomas Gerard Oftring, 65, passed away rather suddenly after a brief illness. He was born to Gerard and Ruth Oftring of Lindenhurst, NY.

Tom resided in Lindenhurst until after high school graduation. In 1979, he joined the Navy, in which he proudly served for 6 1/2 years, posted primarily in Lemoore, CA. After the Navy, he returned to Long Island and worked for Grumman Aerospace for a couple of years. Having decided he liked the weather in California better, and because his two sisters were living there, Tom decided to return to CA in 1989. Eventually, he settled in the Modesto/Oakdale area doing surveying work for Muir Consulting, Inc., a job which he absolutely loved.

Tom was a quiet man who enjoyed both physical activities (softball, golfing, bowling, skiing), more cerebral activities (Jeopardy, puzzles, history games), and listening to swing music. He loved telling jokes and family holidays. Tom was a thoughtful, hard-working, honest man and a good friend to those he let get close to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Janet. Tom is survived by his brother, Gerard (Jerry) Oftring, his sister, Mary Walker (Chris), his beloved cat, JJ, his nieces and nephew (Amanda Seeber, Matthew Roublick, and Katie de los Reyes), and several "grand" nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are set for Friday, September 19, 2025. There will be a Rosary at 9:30 a.m. with a funeral Mass following at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Modesto.

Internment will follow later in the afternoon at San Joaquin National Cemetery in Santa Nella.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, and in accordance with Tom's wishes, any remembrances go to either DAV (Disabled American Veterans) or to Community Hospice.
