Thomas Covert Pritchard, affectionately known as "Big Tom," was born on January 9, 1942, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 16, 2026.
Tom's life was marked by numerous achievements and deep personal connections. He graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis in 1960, where he shone as a star athlete in basketball and track & field. It was during these formative years that he met the love of his life, Donna Jean Moore, whom he married in 1964.
Tom went on to attend Purdue University, where he played basketball, was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture in 1965. Tom then joined ELANCO/Eli Lilly, embarking on a remarkable 28-year career that spanned various roles, from sales to general management to human resources. His career journey took him and his family across the globe, living in cities such as Riverside, New Jersey, Mankato, Minnesota; Indianapolis, Indiana; Atlanta, Georgia; Denver, Colorado; Frankfurt, Germany; Sydney, Australia; Carmel, Indiana and then Greensboro, North Carolina where he was General Manager for an Eli Lilly spinoff, Shianogi Qualicaps. Following this chapter, he moved to Wilmington, North Carolina and during this time he served as VP of Human Resources at Carolina Turkeys, a role he considered the favorite of his career. Tom and Donna then settled in Frisco, Texas for an extended period before Tom moved to Indianapolis about 14 months ago.
Tom was an engaging individual, often described as possessing a "larger than life" personality. Known for his sarcastic wit, he had a remarkable ability to put those around him at ease. His fondness for helping others helped him forge strong communities, whether through his friendships, church involvement, or work associations.
Deeply committed to his family, Tom took great pride in being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He adored his grandchildren, taking every opportunity to be involved in their lives. Whether it was attending their sporting events, taking them horseback riding on his treasured horses Rusty and Shiner, going to the gun range, or fishing in a local pond, he was always creating cherished memories that they will carry with them forever.
Among his proudest accomplishments were the 60 years of marriage to Donna, the founding of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, and numerous hands-on renovation projects, including building an outdoor pool and refurbishing a lake house. His dedication to service was exemplified through his volunteer work at churches and charitable initiatives, specifically as superintendent for House on the Corner, which focused on building homes for families in need.
Tom leaves behind a loving family, including his sons Bob Pritchard (Michelle) and Randy Pritchard (Eileen), and his daughter Shelly Schwalbach (John). His legacy also continues through his grandchildren: Morgan Pritchard, Sydney Benson (Josh), Ariel Jones (Daniel), Isaiah Pritchard, Mackenzie and Mason Schwalbach, Cameron and Katelyn Pritchard, along with his great-grandchildren Scarlett and Addison Jones, and Spencer and Eli Benson.
Tom is preceded in death by his cherished wife, Donna; parents Robert and Mary Pritchard; and sister Nancy Wickstrand. As we remember Tom, we celebrate a life well-lived filled with love, dedication, and unwavering support for those he held dear. His presence will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation and memorial services will be held at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Carmel, Indiana, on January 30, 2026, allowing family and friends the opportunity to pay their respects and honor his remarkable life.
Memorial contributions may be made to Brightwood Community Center. Contributions should be marked for direction to the youth program.
