Thomas Ryan Obituary Thomas F. Ryan, age 82, of Glenshaw, on September 10, 2025 after a courageous battle with glioblastoma.
Born on October 2, 1942, he was the son of the late Thomas and Grace (Putch) Ryan.
Tom served in the US Air Force for 4 years, during which time he studied the Russian language at Syracuse University, and he was stationed in Turkey during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He worked for many years as an electrical designer.
An excellent self-taught guitarist, Tom was well known by Pittsburgh's Irish community in the 1970s and 1980s as an entertainer who could play an impressive repertoire of Irish folk music. He was a regular at the Blarney Stone in Etna, where he also emceed a popular talent show each week. He also loved to sing American folk music, and generations of children in his family grew up with special memories of him singing "Puff the Magic Dragon."
Tom was also an amazing artist and painter, and his grandchildren found hours of entertainment in having him draw anything they could imagine. In addition to his creative talents, Tom was unbeatable in a game of Scrabble or Jeopardy. He was a walking dictionary, who prided himself in completing crossword puzzles in pen with zero mistakes. His extensive vocabulary and dry sense of humor led to a love of wordplay and "Pap Pap jokes" which will be passed down for generations.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Margaret "Peggy" (Vaughan) Ryan; daughters Maureen Pearson, Megan Koroly (Patrick), and Brigid Kane (Adam); grandchildren Katie, Colleen and Kelly Pearson; Maggie, Patrick, Brendan, Tommy and Maeve Koroly; and Owen and Nora Kane; sister Carole Skelly (Richard); brother Timothy Ryan (Vikki); and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Ryan.
A special thank you to the wonderful nurses and aides at Amedysis Hospice for their care and compassion.
Visitation will be held Sunday September 14th from 2-7 PM at Neely Funeral Home, 2208 Mt Royal Blvd., Glenshaw.
