Thomas F. Voytek, Sr., 78, of Dunmore, passed away peacefully on Monday evening at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore, surrounded by his loving family.
He is survived by his devoted wife, the former Madelyn Volz, with whom he shared 53 wonderful years of marriage-a bond built on love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Together, they created a beautiful life filled with family, friendship, and countless cherished memories.
Born in Scranton, Tom was the son of the late Francis and Elizabeth (Onofrey) Voytek. A 1964 graduate of Dunmore High School, Tom embodied the values of hard work and determination from an early age. In 1972, he founded Tom's Garage in Scranton, a business he built from the ground up. With grit, skill, and an endless supply of ethics, he turned it into a trusted name in the community. Working side by side with friends, family, and especially his son, Tommy, Tom took great pride in his work-seeing it not just as a business, but as an extension of his family and his community.
Tom lived each day with a contagious zest for life and a generous heart. Whether hosting family gatherings, attending NASCAR races and parties with his lifelong friends, or simply sharing stories and laughter, he was the heart of every occasion. He especially loved Christmastime, when his home overflowed with warmth, good food, and even better company. He would cook non-stop, making sure everyone left with full bellies and even fuller hearts. Tom's joy came not from being the center of attention, but from bringing people together-a true reflection of his loving spirit.
A proud and noble veteran, Tom honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy, spending four years deployed aboard the USS Enterprise during the Vietnam War. His service was a defining part of his life, one he spoke of with deep pride and gratitude. He treasured the friendships he made during those years and looked forward to every reunion aboard the ship that carried so many of his memories. An active member of the local VFW, Tom continued to honor his fellow veterans and the nation he loved so deeply throughout his life.
Of all his joys, none shone brighter than the time he spent with his "favorite" and only granddaughter, Sara, who lovingly called him Bompa. His guidance, humor, and boundless love left an indelible mark on her heart-and on all who knew him. He was a constant source of encouragement and wisdom for his daughter, Lisa, and he cherished every vacation, every meal, and every ordinary moment spent with her family. His favorite saying, "It's nice to be nice," perfectly captured his outlook on life and the kindness he showed to everyone he met.
He is survived by his loving daughter Lisa Naro and husband Tony, and his cherished granddaughter Sara, (Dunmore). Also surviving are his sisters Betty Ann Costanzo and husband Louis, and Mary Brazil and husband Jerry, (Dunmore); brothers Frank Voytek and wife Donna, (Mount Joy); Steve Voytek and wife Peggy, (Dunmore); and Bobby Voytek and wife Debbie, (Scranton); sister-in-law Joan Volz, (Scranton); brother-in-law Teddy Volz and wife Katie, (Philadelphia); along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who will forever hold him close in their hearts.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved son Thomas F. Voytek, Jr. and infant daughter Carolyn; his in-laws Ted and Helen Volz; and his brother-in-law James Volz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel Church, Chestnut Street, Dunmore. Interment will follow in The Dunmore Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday from 5–8 p.m. at the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home, Inc., 318 E. Drinker Street, Dunmore.
