Thomas Joseph Weis, born August 21, 1940, passed away on September 21, 2025, after a beautiful day visiting with family and friends.
Married for over 61 years, and sweethearts for many years before, Tom is now reunited with the love of his life, Mary Pat (Kadler) Weis, holding hands and enjoying each other's company. For the first time in over 61 years, Mary Pat waited for Tom.
He adored his five daughters, Valerie Herbert, Denise Phillips, Anastasia Weis, Christiana Walsh and Melissa Zoeller and graciously welcomed into his family five son-in-laws, Gus Herbert, Arthur Phillips, Chris Cullen, John Walsh, and Brian Zoeller.
His great joy was being Poppa to his 21 grandchildren: Gus (Kristen), Brian (Allison), and Erin Herbert; Catherine, Aidan, and Jillian Phillips; Christian, Gabriella, and Anya Cullen; John, Isabella, Lilliana, and Thomas Walsh; and Thomas (Claire), Trenton, Mary Caroline, Annie, Logan, Sadie, Sophie Grace, and Paxton Zoeller, and to his treasured great-grandchildren: Gus, Trevor and Kaitlyn Herbert.
The youngest of Edwin and Ella May's eleven children, Tom learned to love with great generosity and grace through the example of his supportive parents and siblings. He is survived by his sisters Ethel Corbett and Peggy Gabehart and their families, along with many cousins, second cousins, nieces and nephews that make up the Weis family. He is now reunited with his brothers and sisters Edwin, Mary Charlotte Hampton, Owen, Bobby, Nancy, Chester and John.
Tom was also close to Mary Pat's family and is survived by Joyce Klusman, Colletta Herbig (Rusty), Libby Kadler and Rich Cwiak along with many other extended Kadler relatives.
With a 1963 Bachelors of Architecture from his beloved University of Notre Dame, Tom spent over 50 years at Nolan & Nolan Architects leading the design and construction of hospitals, churches, and schools throughout Kentucky and Indiana. He designed many memorable and award-winning projects, but his most cherished project was his home of more than 50 years on Thackeray Drive.
Tom also supported his community as chairman and a member of many committees at St. Agnes Parish, Assumption High School, Sacred Heart Academy and the University of Notre Dame Louisville Alumni Club. He volunteered many hours at the Welcome Desk at Baptist East Hospital and was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need.
Tom worked hard, did more than his share and strived always for excellence. He knew his real worth and happiness were found with his family, friends, and community. He was not just bright, but wise, and incredibly patient. He was a man of his word. Tom loved football weekends at Notre Dame, poker games with his family, parties, people watching on Bardstown Road and sitting under a tree with Mary Pat at Lakeside Swim Club. Saturdays were spent tending to the yard and landscaping, and for over 40 years, vacations meant time for family on Hilton Head Island. He laughed a lot, loved fiercely and enjoyed a good meal with others and a bourbon on the rocks. He loved his family and his wife and would tell anyone he lived a wonderful life. We love him dearly and are better people for knowing him.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1920 Newburg Road, at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, 1600 Newburg Road. A reception will follow in Aloysius Hall at St. Agnes Catholic Church. Visitation is scheduled from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Pearson's Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane.
In lieu of flowers, and in tribute to what Tom enjoyed best, spend time with family and friends over a long dinner at one of Louisville's best restaurants telling jokes and stories until closing time.
