Timothy Lee Overturf, 70, of
Newnan, Georgia, passed away on November 2, 2025, after a heroic battle with glioblastoma, a brain cancer.
Tim was born on December 26, 1954, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Ralph and Bettye Dunn Overturf. He married the love of his life, Ann Young, in 1976. Together, they served God and faithfully raised their eight children.
Tim lived his Christian faith in all aspects of his life. During his 30-year career in the U.S. Navy, he served as a chaplain to sailors and Marines throughout multiple duty stations and deployments at both sea and land. This was an adventure for the whole family. His geographically far-flung tours of duty ranged from Norfolk to Guam (three tours), San Diego to Okinawa, and North Carolina to the Middle East. Notably, Tim spent 13 months in Fallujah, Iraq, in 2007, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Among his ship assignments, Tim ministered onboard destroyers (DESRON 32), a submarine tender (USS Frank Cable), and the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis. Perhaps the capstone of Tim's numerous postings was his final duty assignment as Command Chaplain of the Second Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, NC.
It is not surprising to learn that Tim was bestowed some of our nation's highest honors for his service to God and country. These awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal-as well as multiple other personal decorations and recognitions. Tim retired from the Navy in 2017 with the rank of Captain and the appreciation of a grateful nation.
Throughout his entire life, Tim's priorities and principles never wavered. He was a servant to God, his wife, his children, and his fellow humans, for which he never sought recognition. He consistently put others first and would gladly go two miles if it meant someone else would only have to go one.
He had a gift for making people feel seen and appreciated, and he always fought for the underdog. Even during his last weeks in the hospital, Tim wanted to know the names of everyone who cared for him-from the physicians to the staff who brought his meals.
Tim was a lover of puns and other "dad jokes." He laughed easily, with a gregarious laugh that was loud and contagious. He was an avid reader and a hard worker, always encouraging these values in his children.
Above all, Tim loved his family. With eight children, 13 grandchildren, and several sons and daughters-in-law, he made a point to support, encourage, and connect with them all - keeping notes on important dates and events in everyone's lives so he could ask them for the latest news.
But the shining star of his life was Ann. Together, they lived a life of devotion and service to God, each other, their family, and the military for 49 faithful years. In addition to his beloved wife, Tim is survived by his children, Lauren (Dustin) Koritko, Dane Overturf, Kelli (Ethan) Uy, Leif Overturf, Paige Overturf, Drew (Elisa) Overturf, Holly (Brandon) Schott, and Clay (Jenna) Overturf; 13 adoring grandchildren; a sister, Linda (Alan) Roman; and countless other relatives and friends around the world. Tim was preceded in death by his parents.
A service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 18, at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tim's name to Coweta Pregnancy Services, 29 Brown Street,
Newnan, GA 30263. The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the caring providers and staff at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, where Tim received treatment for acute myeloid leukemia and glioblastoma.
