Timothy Porter Obituary

Noank - It is with profound sadness, shock, and heartbreak that the family announces the sudden but peaceful passing of Timothy William Porter of Noank, age 67, Jan. 23, 2026, in Mystic. Tim is survived by his father, Oliver H. Porter (Prilly Griscom) and preceded in death by his beloved mother, Janeen D. Porter. Tim was the eldest brother to Bob, Dan, Mike (wife Trish) and Susan (husband Joe) Porter.

Tim was born May 28, 1958, in the Vallejo, California Hospital at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. As a youngster, Tim loved the new changes and opportunities with Navy duty station moves around the country. He arrived in Noank at the age of 13 and grew to become an active community member, including becoming an Eagle Scout in Troop 20. Tim graduated from R.E. Fitch High School in 1976. After attending Central and Eastern Connecticut Universities, he earned a business degree.

Tim had a 46-year career in the marina/yachting world. He started as a yard hand at the Noank Village Boatyard and finished as the Mystic Shipyard Yard Manager for 30 years. He was an incredibly dedicated manager and worked very hard to meet all the business and customers' needs. He was sought after for his knowledge and expertise within the local marine boating industry. He knew the Fishers Island Sound rock piles well and their boat scars/repairs, which will be his secret. He held a Coast Guard license for Passenger Vessels, Limited.

Tim was an avid sailor (Factory Girl, Hooligan and Wild Horses). He was a member of Mystic River Mudheads, Ram Island Yacht Club and a longtime Off Soundings Club racer. He had sailing ventures ranging from local waters to Key West, Bermuda, and the Great Lakes. He was well known for his foredeck (monkey/ape) abilities and antics.

He enjoyed playing tennis, volleyball and golfing with friends. He loved to travel and to visit friends/family across the country. He loved watching sports, "Go Blue," and was a cheerleader for all his nieces and nephews' activities: Zachary, Jack (Ashley), Kate, Kara, Greg (Arielle), David, Janeen, Justin, Sean and Madison; and great-niece, Gia. Tim had an infectious and outgoing vibrant spirit and never passed up a good time. He loved sharing his adventures and hearing the same from others. His quiet, non-assuming presence, casual conversations and positive outlook will be missed.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 1, at the Noank Baptist Church, immediately followed by a reception at the Groton Elks Club.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mystic Seaport or the MRMSA Dillon Fund.

Tim and I were classmates at Fitch and played volleyball together for about 10 years. He was a terrific person and always a joy to be around. He will be sorely missed by many. My condolences to his family.

Tim, such a gentle and kind man...the world is a lesser place without you in it but is a much, much better place for having had you here for 67 years...I always felt you were a little wiser, knew a little better, had seen a little more but never made anyone feel lesser for your wisdom...I will miss you deeply...love you, step-bro... My sincere condolences to the Porter family.

Tim was my friend since junior high school when we moved to Mystic/Noank at the same age. We had a lot of fun growing up together (except when we worked at Abbott´s and found ways to constantly get into trouble with Ernie).

As I often say when an old friend passes suddenly, I wish I had made a better effort trying to stay in touch over the years. That was especially true with Tim.

Cheers to Tim, you will be missed by many.

Tim was an essential member of our crew. There was no job too big or small. He was the fireman. He could handle any emergency. He made our boats faster. We won races because Tim was aboard.
He was a great entertainer. Tim was the central figure in many tales told about races and the parties that followed.
He was famous not only in Mystic, but Block Island, Shelter Island, Greenport, and Newport. He will always be remembered at Fishers Island, both at the Yacht Club and the golf course at the Big Club.
Sail on Mr. Timmy, we will always love you.
Bill and Suzie.

Very sad news, I moved to Noank in 1974, and had the pleasure of meeting "The Porter Boys" and of course Tim. Very friendly and welcoming, always said hello to me. We hung out with friends from Noank at the park across from their house and at Spicer park. Great Guy and a true Noanker, I´m very sure he will be missed. RIP Tim and my deepest condolences to the Porter family.
