VIRGINIA BEACH – Timothy Edward Ryan, 78, died on July 20, 2025. A native of Bayville, New York, he was predeceased by his parents, H. Patrick and Anne E. Ryan and his oldest sister, Patricia Ryan Tini.
Tim leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless wonderful memories. Tim was quick to laugh, slow to anger, and never met a stranger he couldn't strike up a conversation with. He was immensely proud of his entire family, always there to support and cheer on his treasured granddaughters. Tim loved being with his beloved wife of 55 years, Sharon. Together they embraced every adventure-from walking their dog Minnie and kayaking the waterways, to traveling the world and raising their two children as the Navy moved them from place to place. Known for saying "It's going to be a good day" whenever he saw a pelican, he had an ever-optimistic view of life.
Tim served our country in the U. S. Navy for 22 years; retiring as a Command Master Chief in 1989. His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal and three Navy Commendation Medals. He was most proud of the time served aboard the USS Lexington where he was responsible for the integration of over 100 enlisted females aboard the first carrier to have women assigned. He also served as the 'salt' on salt & pepper teams focused on enhancing racial integration in the Navy in the 1970s. After his retirement from the Navy, Tim was the Director of Administration of Computer Dynamics Inc. (CDI) and then worked as a Deputy Director for Unisys operations in Hampton Roads (1991 – 2011).
After 45 years of work and service, he retired in 2011. In retirement, he was a volunteer Election Official, as well as a Docent at the Virginia Aquarium. Moreover, Tim served in many capacities within the Villages at West Neck. Specifically, he was a past - President of the West Neck Educators Club (WNEC) and had served as the Director on the Board of the Villages at West Neck.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Ryan; children, Tricia (Ryan) Dinterman and son-in-law Rob; Todd Ryan and daughter-in-law Megan; and grandchildren, Hannah, Kylee, Emma and Molly; and by two sisters, Nancy Maresca (husband Lou) and Paula Conan, (husband Ed) and his brother Terry Ryan (wife Becky) and brother-in-law Tom Tini.
A memorial service will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home - Princess Anne Chapel - Virginia Beach, VA 23456. The memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 28, 2025. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home after the service.
Donations in his memory may be made to the West Neck Educators Club Scholarship Fund. Donations may be mailed to: West Neck Educators Club 2881 Einstein Drive, Va Beach, VA 23456
