Toby Carlisle Silberman of Lookout Mountain died Saturday, January 10, 2026. Born July 9, 1944, he was the son of the late C. C. and Anita Caudle Silberman. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betsy; their daughter Catherine Leckenby and husband Kevin; son Pat and wife Jenny; grandchildren, Carlisle Silberman, Charlie Silberman, Sarah Grace Leckenby; sister in law Catherine Gilmer and husband Mel: brother in law John Chisolm and his wife Sarah; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Toby graduated from Baylor School in 1963 and attended the University of Tennessee. He married his high school sweetheart, Betsy Chisolm, at First Presbyterian Church in 1968, where he became a deacon and along with Betsy was superintendent of the Senior High Sunday School department.
He served his country in Vietnam for a year and then joined his father in the property and casualty insurance business. Later he was an admissions officer at Baylor School.
In 1971 Toby began his 30-year career as a football back judge with the TSSAA, the Southern Conference, and the Southeastern Conference, during which he worked two SEC championship games. In recognition for his contribution to athletics, he was inducted into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame.
In retirement his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Wizard." He loved spending time at the beach. playing golf, and working out at the Sports Barn. His ardent support of Baylor and the University of Tennessee was evident to anyone who knew him. He was especially thrilled when his grandson Charlie was a member of the 2025 state championship football team.
Toby's family is deeply grateful for the excellent care he received from the staff at Bailey Manor and from Hearth Hospice. John Fidati and earlier, Edward Snodgrass, provided wonderful support to him as caregivers.
