Reverend Tom J. Mixon, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and servant of God, was called home on June 27, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in Marengo County, Alabama, Reverend Mixon lived a life anchored in faith, family, and unwavering love. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by the family he cherished-and who cherished him in return.
Reverend Tom J. Mixon, a man of deep and unwavering faith, dedicated more than 50 years of his life to serving Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. Until he became ill, he answered every call to serve with humility, taking on numerous roles over the decades. He served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Youth Minister, and Youth Supervisor for the Sunlight District Congress of Christian Education.
In addition to his church work, Reverend Mixon was an active member of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority Incorporated – Beta Xi Chapter. His lifelong commitment to the spiritual growth of young people and his selfless service were defining aspects of his ministry. Through his steady presence, wise counsel, and deep passion for teaching God's Word, Reverend Mixon made a lasting impact on countless lives.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Roman Lee and Luecressie Mixon; his beloved sons, Terry and Jerry Mixon; his precious grandsons, Dirrell Mullins and Lavonne Mixon; his dear brother, Brooks Glass Mixon; and his devoted uncle and aunt, Mr. & Mrs. Lee (Lessie) Holt, Jr. Though their absence was deeply felt, Reverend Mixon remained a pillar of strength and grace, finding comfort in the legacy of love they left behind.
Left to treasure his memory is his devoted wife of 48 years, Betty Wilson Mixon, whose steadfast love was a constant source of joy and partnership. Together, they built a life filled with purpose, laughter, and unwavering devotion to marriage and faith.
Reverend Mixon's legacy continues through his three loving children: Timothy Thomas Mixon, Alisha (Jimmy) Bailey, and LaChandra (Demorio) Wilcox. He was a proud and present grandfather to five grandchildren-Keelan Kennedy, Tyler Wilcox, Bryce Wilcox, Kamryn Wilcox, and Timia Mixon-each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. His heart grew even fuller with the arrival of three great-grandchildren: Kairee, Keelan Jr., and Khylan Kennedy, whose lives will be forever touched by his love and guidance. He is also survived by his loving and devoted sister, Ms. Annie L. Mixon of Danbury, Connecticut, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.
Reverend Mixon lived his life in service to others, a true reflection of his faith. Whether in the church or community, he never met a stranger. He was known for his warm greetings and his thoughtful questions to those he met: "What's your name? Where is your home? What church do you belong to? Have you been baptized?" These inquiries weren't just conversation starters-they were the seeds of connection, care, and concern for every soul he encountered.
He will be remembered for his deep compassion, unwavering faith, gentle wisdom, and the unconditional love he extended to all who knew him. He not only preached the Word-he lived it every day.
Though our hearts are heavy, we celebrate the life of a man who truly lived with purpose and loved without limits. Reverend Tom J. Mixon's journey on Earth may be complete, but the light of his life and love will continue to shine for generations to come.
