Tom Willmeng Obituary

Tom "Doc" Willmeng, of Vicksburg passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026, at the age of 84. Born on August 31, 1941, in Watervliet, MI. He was the son of Gordon and Helen (Combs) Willmeng. He lived a life characterized by selflessness, compassion, and a dedication to his community.

Tom's career in medicine spanned over four decades, specializing in orthopedics. A graduate of the University of Michigan, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree, he began his journey in healthcare after completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Notre Dame. Tom embraced his profession with enthusiasm and compassion. His career was fitting for a good ole farm boy from Watervliet. He was a proud graduate of Coloma High School, Class of 1959.

Proudly serving as a flight surgeon and captain in the United States Air Force, Tom continued to dedicate himself to helping others throughout his life. He made countless house calls, refusing to charge anyone for them. In addition to his private practice, he played an integral role in local athletics, contributing his time to several local schools in Michigan, especially Vicksburg. As well as the Western Michigan University hockey team. His commitment to the Vicksburg Athletic Boosters was particularly notable, as he served as president for over a decade and volunteered more than 40 years. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to athletics and student programs, Tom was inducted into the Vicksburg High School Hall of Fame in 2015. He was also a faithful member of St, Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Vicksburg.

In his personal life, Tom found profound happiness in his marriage to Maryann (Schultheis) Willmeng, whom he married on September 2, 1978. They were married for 47 years. The couple met serendipitously on the campus of Western Michigan University at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, where they shared an instant connection when they locked eyes and it turned into dinner. Together, they traveled the world, enjoyed winters in The Villages, Florida, and created cherished memories on canoe trips to Pine River that became a family tradition.

If you knew Doc there is a good chance you were welcomed once or twice with his famous apple pies. He was known for sharing apple pie sections with his colleagues in Kalamazoo. Because that was his nature, always thinking of others and making them feel appreciated. Tom also played Santa Claus for 40 years, not only going to the hospitals,l and his office, but also to the homes of friends and families that he didn’t even know to make their Christmas even brighter.

Tom was not just a devoted husband but also a loving father, proud of his children, Danny and Kelly, as well as his grandchildren. An avid sports fan, he remained a loyal supporter of the University of Notre Dame. He also enjoyed archery, hunting, fishing, and spending time in nature, and even just simply splitting wood. Golfing, paddleball, and skiing were also among his favored pastimes.

Tom "Doc" Willmeng will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but for his unwavering commitment to family, community, and the joy he brought to those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of kindness and love will undoubtedly continue to influence the lives of many.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Gordon and Helen Willmeng; and four siblings: Johnny Willmeng, Mary Coon, Mike WIllmeng, and Steve WIllmeng.

Tom “Doc” Willmeng is survived by his wife of 47 years, Maryann; two children: Danny (Cindy) Willmeng, of IL; Kelly (Chris) Lupis, of FL; and two grandsons: Jack and Luke Willmeng. He is also survived by his three brothers: Jim (Allison) Willmeng, of FL; Jerry (Charlene) Willmeng, of Watervliet; and Dave Willmeng, of NC; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
