Thomas "Tommy" Steven Svobodny was born on April 1, 1969, in Willmar the son of Thomas and Jayne Svobodny. Tommy grew up and attended school in Willmar, graduating in 1987. Following graduation, Tommy enrolled at Ridgewater College where he excelled in football. After 2 years at Ridgewater, Tommy received a full-ride scholarship to play D1 football at Morehead State University, where Tommy performed at a high enough level to be signed by the NFL's Buffalo Bills.
Following the end of his football career, Tommy settled in the Kerkhoven area with his family. Winter was Tommy's favorite season, because it meant he could spend countless hours working on his snowmobiles, hoping to make them fast enough to win races. Hunting was another area of passion for Tommy, especially coyotes when the ground became snow covered. Tommy was known as being a big man with an even bigger sense of humor, his wisecracks could brighten up even the darkest days.
Tommy passed away on Saturday, May 25th at Abbott Northwestern Hospital after a brief illness. He is survived by his son Andrew; his father Thomas, his brother Jon (and Nicole); and sister Kari Jerve. He was preceded in death by his mother.
