Tommy Joe Thompson, a man of selflessness and compassion, passed away on November 26, 2025, in
Odessa, Texas, leaving a legacy of love and service. Born on October 23, 1940, in O'Brien, Texas, Tommy's journey through life was marked by an unwavering dedication to his family, community, and the pursuit of justice.
Tommy's career in law enforcement was distinguished by his tenure as Chief of Police in Eunice, New Mexico. His bravery and commitment to public safety were exemplified by the accommodation of Valor he received for his courageous actions during a bank robbery. Following his esteemed service, Tommy continued to safeguard the community, working in security for local wrestling matches, the Angels Baseball Team in Midland as well as Tropicana in Las Vegas and later, Texas. These roles were not just jobs for Tommy; they were extensions of his passion for protecting others.
Those who knew Tommy were touched by his boundless generosity. He was the kind of person who would go above and beyond for anyone in need, often giving the shirt off his back or the last dollar in his pocket to help a stranger. His heart knew no bounds, as evidenced by his open invitation to anyone without a place to go during the holidays, ensuring they had a seat at his table and a warm meal to enjoy.
Tommy's love for entertainment was matched only by his love for sports. A loyal fan of the Texas Rangers, he relished the excitement of baseball and wrestling, finding joy in the thrill of the game and the stories of the athletes. His favorite shows included classics like "Family Feud," "Gunsmoke," "Live Patrol," and "Cops," which often sparked lively discussions and laughter among his family and friends.
Above all, Tommy was a devoted family man. He cherished every moment with his son Travis and daughter-in-law Oralia, his brother Charlie and sister-in-law Margie. His sister Delene and brother-in-law John, brother in-law Tommy Brown and his wife Carol, along with his nieces Kelly, Toni, Jennifer, and Shauna, and his nephew Jason, held a special place in his heart. His grandchildren John, Greg, Corey, and Ryan, and great-grandchildren John, Jaidyn, and Valerie, brought him immeasurable joy and pride. Tommy's furbaby, Babygirl, his beloved Shih Tzu, was a constant companion and source of comfort. His presence will be deeply missed by his great-nephews James and Tyler, and the countless lives he touched with his kindness and warmth.
Tommy is preceded in death by his wife Lynn, his son Bobby, his daughter Tanna, his parents, Jack Thompson and Nettie Lee Petifils, and his sister Sherryl.
