Tony Berta, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2025, at the age of 72 in Davidson County, North Carolina. Born on March 9, 1953, in Wyoming County, West Virginia, Tony lived a life full of passion, resilience, and generosity.
Tony dedicated over twenty years of his life to the coal industry, a career that not only provided for his family but also filled him with immense pride. As a member of the United Mine Workers Association, he was a staunch supporter of his fellow miners, advocating tirelessly for their rights and welfare. Beyond his professional endeavors, Tony was an outstanding carpenter who took great pride in building his own home from the ground up, showcasing his remarkable skills and craftsmanship.
A lover of life's simple pleasures, Tony found joy in restoring old cars and had a particular fondness for sports cars. He was an avid deer hunter and found tranquility in the great outdoors. His generous spirit was known to all, as he never met a stranger and was always willing to offer help to those in need. His family recalls with fondness how he went by the beat of his own drum, living life on his terms and with a heart full of love for others.
Tony is preceded in death by his beloved parents, John Berta Sr. and Vida Mae Stewart, his brother Connie Ray Berta, and his sister Margaret Ann McCoy. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength through his surviving family, including his daughters, Toni Berta-London (Joseph) and Stacie Torrence (Stacy); his grandchildren, Alex Styers (Olivia), Jazmine Styers, Nathan Bundy (Sydney), Alva John Bundy (Alischa St.Louis), Shawn Lester (Brooklyn Greene), Gage Torrence, Jordan Torrence, Blake Torrence, and Alyssa Torrence (Jesse Martin); and his great-grandchildren, Gabriele St.Louis, Watson Bundy, Audrey "Elsie" Bundy, Kennedi Bundy, Addy Styers, and Braelynn Martin.
He is also survived by his siblings, Billie Jo Spence, John Berta Jr., Martillia Berta, Odette Tolor, Robert Berta, James Berta, Thomas Berta, Michelle Berta-Williams, and Troy Berta, as well as numerous extended family members and cherished friends.
A private family service will be held at Stewart Cemetery in Matheny, West Virginia, at a later date to honor his memory. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that a tree be planted in Tony's honor, a testament to his enduring spirit and love for nature.
Tony fought a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease, demonstrating his unwavering strength and resilience until the very end. He will be remembered fondly and missed dearly by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. May his soul rest in peace.
