Retired TSgt Luther "Woody" Woodcock, of Lake Greenwood, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025. Born on October 19, 1933, in Gulfport, Mississippi, he was the beloved son of the late Luther and Clarice (Ladner) Woodcock.
Woody was a man of quiet strength, gentle kindness, and enduring wisdom. A devoted husband, he shared 46 beautiful years of marriage with his dear wife, Gladys, whom he cherished deeply. His respect, devotion, and tenderness toward her were evident to all who knew them.
In addition to his wife Gladys, Woody is survived by his daughter Deirdra O'Brien of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and his brother Charles Woodcock of Trussville, Alabama. He was predeceased by his daughter Bonnie Boboski; brothers Harold, Louis, Dunie Woodcock and Pete Ladner; and sister Betty (Woodcock) Golden.
Woody proudly served his country in the Navy and United States Air Force, retiring as a Technical Sergeant after serving in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Following his military service, Woody continued to contribute his talents as a Plant Engineer at Electro Knit Fabrics, Selkirk, Manitoba Canada and later as the Corporate Engineer for U.S. Finishing, Greenville, SC, and American Fast Print, Spartanburg, SC, retiring in 1992.
He found joy and peace in nature - especially near the water. A true fisherman at heart, he loved spending time on the lake, casting a line, and enjoying the serenity of the outdoors. He had a deep appreciation for music and sports. He was a fastball pitcher with the Air Force and later continued in his civilian life.
A skilled handyman and natural problem-solver, Woody could fix just about anything. His calm presence, thoughtful words, and humble spirit made the greatest impact. Those fortunate enough to know him will remember his quiet wisdom, steady and compassionate heart.
Thanks to his special caregivers, Veronica, Kiandra, Kaneesha and nurse, Jodie who showed Woody so much love and compassion.
A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Greenwood, SC with Father Francisco Oñate-Vargas officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (915 Mathis Rd Greenwood SC 29649) or to Meals on Wheels (PO Box 997 Greenwood SC 29648).
Lunch reception will be served in the church hall.
