Coleman Funeral Home of Olive Branch
John Tyler Cummings, 43, of Olive Branch, MS, passed away on the morning of July 19, 2023, following emergency heart surgery with major complications.
Tyler was born on December 30, 1979 to Gery and Bettie Cummings in Morristown, New Jersey. Tyler graduated from Randolph High School before returning to Mississippi where he earned his Bachelors of Arts in English Language and Literature (2002) and Masters of Arts in Secondary Education Teaching (2007) from Mississippi State University. Tyler worked in DeSoto County Schools for 10 years and earned his Education Specialist in Leadership and Administration from Arkansas State University (2015). In 2017, Tyler joined School Status, LLC to continue his support of education as an Education Training and Customer Success Manager.
In addition to his passion for education, Tyler habitually ran marathons, training for his favorite annual race supporting St. Jude Cancer Research Hospital. He was an avid reader, an admirer of nature, and a strong supporter of everyone in his life. Tyler enjoyed spending time with his family and exploring the world with them. He passed his love of learning to his children, and they would often trade facts as they walked together as a family. Tyler and Connor would cook together, and Tyler loved teaching him to work through a process, as well as cheering him on in all his athletic achievements. Tyler and Bettie enjoyed reading and learning together and shared these times early in the morning before the rest of the family joined them.
Tyler is survived by his wife, Michelle; son, Connor; and daughter, Bettie, in addition to his mother, Bettie Cummings; brother, Brent Cummings (wife, Laura, and their daughters, Emily and Meredith); and sister, Katie Cummings Chustz (husband, Jamie, and their sons, Steven and Sam); as well as numerous extended family members and Michelle's family who cherished him.
Tyler was predeceased by his father, Gery Cummings.
A celebration of Tyler's life will be held on Saturday, July 22, at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of Maples Memorial United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior in Wesley Hall. Reverend Kerry Powell and Reverend John Sudduth will officiate.
In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that you please consider donating to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (www.stjude.org), running as a St. Jude hero, or supporting your local blood bank. Tyler received many forms of life sustaining blood products and was a lifetime blood donor himself.
