Ulysses J. VanCourt

Ulysses J. Vancourt, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on January 2, 2025, at the age of 85.
Born on November 9, 1939, in Gretna, Louisiana, to the late Floristine C. VanCourt and the late Herman J. VanCourt Sr., Ulysses was the second of four children.
He attended All Saints Elementary and Middle School, and L.B. Landry High School; he began his career as a carpenter at a young age, following in this father's footsteps. Throughout his life, he became renowned as one of the finest carpenters.
In 1971, he married the love of his life, and together they spent fifty-five years building a family that he cherished deeply, raising five children.
A lifelong resident of Gretna, Louisiana, Ulysses was known for his compassionate nature and generous spirit. He dedicated many years to helping others during their times of need, never meeting a stranger; he found joy in celebrating their successes and assisted those facing challenges around him. He was always genuinely present for the people in his life.
Ulysses is survived by his children–Rosalind VanCourt-Washington (Larry), Detdra Jones (Clarence), Ulysses Douglas (late Alicia), Bobbie Hayes (Edward), Leonard Hines (Andrea), and Channing VanCourt-Meggs (Jamal); one brother–Herman VanCourt Jr. (Yvonne); one sister–Althea Druhet; a childhood friend–Earl Ellis; twenty-two grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He held a special place in his heart for his "bonus grandchild and caregiver"–Amy Seal, as well as his nieces, nephews, and friends.
His absence will be profoundly felt by all who loved him.
Ulysses was preceded in death by his beloved wife–Andrea C. Vancourt; his parents– Floristine C. VanCourt and Herman J. VanCourt Sr.; his daughter–Shauna Carter; his sister–Glenda V. Williams; and one grandchild–Arman Washington.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the following services on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at All Saints Catholic Church, 1441 Teche Street, New Orleans, LA 70114: The Visitation at 9:00 AM; the Obituary Reading and Tribute from 10:45 AM until 11:15 AM; and the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM.
