A graveside service for SFC Darel Keith Atkinson, U.S. Army (Retired) will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, August 15, 2025, at the Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo, with full military honors. Mr. Atkinson passed away peacefully on Friday afternoon at his residence.

Darel proudly served his country in the United States Army for 22 years, earning the respect of his fellow soldiers and the gratitude of a nation. His commitment to duty, country, and family defined the man he was; honorable, dedicated, and deeply loved.

Born and raised in Indiana, Darel remained a proud Midwesterner at heart. He was a passionate sports fan; cheering faithfully for the Cincinnati Bengals, Cincinnati Reds, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. But more than anything, Darel was a devoted family man who cherished time spent with his loved ones.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah Atkinson; his children, Matthew Atkinson, Kari Winter, and DJ Atkinson; and two grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sisters, Neva Bowman (Jim) and Angela Barnes (Johnny); his brother, Perry Atkinson (Debbie) and Brian Atkinson (Deanne Overmyer); and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Trorie Atkinson; his father, Carl Atkinson; his mother, Shelby Barnes; and his sister, Tressa C. Arnette.

Darel will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of service, love, and loyalty will live on through his family and all who were blessed to call him a friend.
